View Full Version : Which IntelliMouse Optical???

I would like to get a new mouse....
I want to get an IntelliMouse Optical, because it has extra buttons and no ball. :)
What is the difference between the MS IntelliMouse Explorer, and the IntelliMouse Optical?
Other than that, one is white and the other is a metally grey/blue colour or something?
More importantly Jungle sell the Explorer for £41.11 and the Optical for £31.95.
What do you get for your extra tenner? :rolling:
Also I have a problem with my current moose. A rebadged (for TIME), MS WheelMouse I think.
Problem is this, sometimes when pressing buttons Mouse1 or Mouse2..., Mouse3 also gets "pressed", of it's own accord. This happens only occasionally, but often enough to be irrtating.
Particularly when playing Q3A(and variants), because you suddenly start zooming in, which is a real problem when fighting someone close to you.:)
Also, when I first started playing CS I bound MouseButton3 to "Reload", and suddenly unintentionally reloading in the middle of a fire fight is a hazard also...
So I unbound Mouse3, basically leaving it as a wasted button.
I am wondering has anyone encountered a similair problem with their mouse, MS IntelliMouses in particular?
:dog:
Well the Explorer is the big silver cool lighty up one so I suppose thats worth the extra tenner. Tbh, you should invest in a good mouse 'cause it's very important obviously. I got the Ex. and it's damn fine. 5 buttons in total. :)

Thanks for the prompt reply.
So the non-explorer IntelliMoose doesn't have the Cylon style glowing red eye?
What sort of surface does the mouse need? Is it better on a mat, or a plain desk?
How long have you had yours? Any wear and tear? Any mysterious Mouse3/Wheel Button presses occuring?

The differnece is
Optical = white, for left and right handers, buttons 4+5 on either side, and it does have the red glow :E
Explorer = silver, right handed only (u may find it uncomfortable if u have small hands) buttons 4+5 are both on the left of it
see these pitures:

btw do a search for buy.com vouchers on this forum and u can get the optival one for £18 :)

So, does that mean with the explorer you operate either button 4 or 5 with your thumb, but with the optical, you use one button with your thumb, and one with your ickle finger?
I'm holding my mouse and trying to imagine what that would be like....
It feels odd using my little finger to click, does it take some getting used to?
Does your little finger become all big and muscular?

One more thing.
They both have mouse-wheels, yes?
So you can press Mouse3, or scroll it up and down?

yes thumb does button 4/5 on the Explorer
yes ickle finger for button press on the optical
yes they both have mouse wheels on button three
yes thats a voucher and quit with the dodgey links :naughty:
yes sheep do fly
I've got the explorer one and it seems to fit my hand a lot better than the optical, its bigger too and feels like it was made for the job whereas the little optical feels like a converted normal mouse with an extra button on the side spekaing of which I normally use my ickle finger to grip the side, I can't imagine doing that with a button in the way somehow. Personal preference I suppose, pop into PCWorld and wrench them about for half hour to get a feel and when the sales guy comes over screech really loudly for a few seconds then stutter DdddDduuhhh ttthhhese needdd ffeeeeding?, he'll soon leave you in peace whilst you beat off all-comers on the Dreamcast demo stand, works for me on a Sunday afternoon anyway :naughty:

Sorry, didn't realise that link was dodgy!
Although, in hindsight, I suppose WP sell stuff as well, so my inadvertent :pimp:ing was a bit :naughty:
Ahem....
WP, are fine purveyors of gubbins.
I myself recently purchased a copy of the brilliant "Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force", from their most excellent site. :smokin:

There's a good reason for that.
They STINK OF OLD MEN.
Where in the world? Somewhere bloody else.
Little finger on Explorer? No. 2 for your thumb, 2 normal buttons and the wheel is also a button. Get that one m8, it looks l33t! :D

As from MS site:
*The IntelliEye sensor performs best on surfaces with detail to track. It will not function on surfaces without visible detail (like glass)or surfaces where it will see its reflection (like mirrors or glossy surfaces). The sensor may also have difficulty tracking on highly repetitive patterns (like some printed photographs from magazines or newspapers).
I have a metal PC desk which has a perforated surface. It doesn't work too well as you can imagine. Now the problem isn't that my mouse ball gets dirty, it's if my mouse pad gets dirty and sticks :)
Got the Explorer the other day and it took a bit of getting used to. I have larger hands that covers regular mice but my natural position is slightly back on this mouse, this makes the one thumb button seem a little to far away. I do like the scan rate on it. Very sensitive. On CS I have to drop my sensitivity setting from 13 down to 9.
Still having trouble mapping crouch and walk to buttons 4 & 5 though. They don't seem to toggle for the duration of the press, just bobs me down for a second for duck.

[HLnC]Jay-Dee - "and ickle finger holding the right side ".
Are you saying you can't use all five buttons?
Anyway, thanks.
I've gone for the Explorer.
Although, after reading Willypete's post, im a little scared that it might be too big for me too hold.
Also I did a search for, er some of the things
I found a thingy whatsit, that got me 30 quids off 60 squids. :E
So I decided to get meself a copy of Norton AntiVirus 2001, and Norton Firewall, bundle!
Cheers.
