According to PC Zone it is ?, i don't see how meself, everyone to their own opinions mind. I played PST for about 5 hours got bored and unistalled it, they gave Bg2 85% and quote " anyone expecting Balders gate 2 to herlad a new era in roleplaying games may as well give up now " WTF, ok the posts on this board have been picking up though i regulary read the forums on bgdungeon and any post on there will be off the 1st page in under 2hours with about 10 replies and going by the views there and here BG2 kicks the arse off any other single player roleplaying game ever made.

Well, I read PCZone as well, and I've noticed how the guys there set a lot of store by how original a game is. Planescape: Torment introduced a new level of roleplaying and NPC interaction, whereas BG2, for all that it's the best RPG ever, is just a bigger, better version of BG1 with a bunch more features and a better storyline.

I loved Planescape: Torment, once I'd got into it (which took more than a few hours, I admit). It's exactly the kind of RPG I like, and while BG2 goes a long way towards that standard, it's still got its roots in the old hack 'n slash, oh-cool-here's-another-magical-sword format.

All the same, there's no excuse for giving it 85%. It is better than Torment, it's just that this sort of gameplay is no longer new to us.

I'm not saying 85% is a bad score, its a goodish mark, though work went more into the story and npc interaction, perhaps poeple completly new to bg/bioware games may find it hard to get into, the score should have made the nineties IMHO as its by far the best bioware game to date. The best games i have everplayed have never been the most graphically brilliant evermade but the games which are the ones you want to replay again and again have made me explore every last little detail. everytime i have gone back to the orgininal BG i have still discovered something new,the last time i played BG i met a band of shadow thiefs wanting to help me out. At least PC Gamer gave the game a score which was more deserving.

Larch: Talking about throwing money away, PCZone is cheaper than any of the other games magazines I've found. And the reviews agree with me if they don't with you... so I buy PCZone, on the rare occasions I want to buy a magazine.

Theres a reason why its cheaper...
Anyway without wishing to begin a flame war (see flame war boo? run boo! RUN!!!) I have PST and BG2 and BG2 is the better game by a considerable distance.

Herbal: PST is Planescape: Torment. Don't tell me you've never heard of it, most people voted it RPG of the year 1999 :)

Everyone's allowed their own opinion... I know Planescape and PCZone aren't to everyone's taste... and I'm certainly not going to start a flame war in my own forum :)

I played pst for a few hours, but didn't like it, it felt too strange so i uninstalled it.
about 3 days later i was bored so i put it back on again, and played it for a day.
I got really into it, and i think its the best game i've ever played, better than halflife, better than counterstrike, better than diablo 2, better than BG2.
It's just a really amazing game that really struck a chord with me, i found it fascinating to play as the nameless one and to find out what happened to you during all your past lifes, and then the ending was a masterpiece, i was choked up when i had spoken to all my party at the end of the game and to what they said.
I just didn't want that game to end, and i couldn't stop playing it.
Baldurs gate 2 seems a bit like diablo 2 with a lot more depth, its good, but just not that good, just BG1 with more bells and whistles

mm...its interesting that both games use the same engine with a few different whistles and bells. The presentation of BG2 is slightly better but speel effects in PST are better I think. In any case I think it's far more down to the story and focus of the game - PST has none of this "build a character, choose a class" stuff... in this respect its far more of an adventure simply finding out about your character... and Morte is fantastic!... I think the difference between PST and BG2 is that between BladeRunner and Starwars.. matter of opinion if differences in the game engine are disregarded. Thinking about it a little more I think that anybody would be hard pushed to argue that one is better than the other. Buy both, play both, be happy. I still hate PC Zone though.

I could never get into PST myself, and I've been meaning to return to it, but other games games keep coming out.....

As for PC Zone's review, I certainly think it should have got a higher mark but there you go.

Check out the latest PC Gamer, it has a six page review of BG2 and awards it 93% and game of the month status, a bit nearer the mark imo.

I still don't have BG2 however I would have to say that PS:T is the best RPG I have ever played (and I have played a lot of RPGs) :E

If BG1 and PS:T had both just been released this month for the first time I would probably give BG 80% (good game, benchmark, nice storyline, too much wandering around, not much characterisation, boring magic items, talking is tedious and generally pointless) and PS:T about 90-94% (Great Story, very original, hardly any wandering around, increadible characterisation, group NPC's actually act like people instead of mindless fighting things, very funny, you actually feel much more powerful as you go up levels and gain items lots of interesting stuff to read, maybe a bit too much talking) ;)

As long as BG2 has fixed all of the problems and tedium of BG1 then I think it is at least on Par with Torment although I find it hard to imagine it ever being as clever of funny as Torment :)

PST imo has the best storyline I've ever seen in a computer game. It is also very polished and had a lot of nice touches. BG2 basically took the new touches from pst (like the journal) and added them to make BG better. Both games are brilliant. BG2 probably edges it but Torment's story is just sooooo good (the main baddy is VERY origanal too!).

---some spoilers to pst story---

Loved finding out about what a f**ked up person the nameless one used to be too. And the bit in the tomb where it reads like the tattoo on your back but says at the end 'DON'T TRUST THE SKULL', the tattoo morte reads 4 u.
And how u used to kick the **** out of morte in flashbacks when morte is saying what good partners u were. Become pretty goddamn powerful too.
Oh ye u can sleep with harlots!

Someone told me there are over 1 million words in that game.
