View Full Version : Has anyone been clicking on the Wireplay news headlines then?
Just out of interest... the idea behind them is to encourage people to read the Wireplay site more often (it saves you having to visait the Wireplay front page to see the latest news - the headlines are delivered straight to the forums). Is anyone using them or are they a blatent waste of valuable forum real-estate?
Look out for the new improved version going live in about 15 minutes :E
Cheers,
Skunk
I like em :)
Though it is beginning to look a bit cluttered up there ^. What with the ad, forum navigation, headlines and that gameplay navigation box...
I know what you mean - I reckon it'll be fine as long as we don't add anything else though.
/me discards his idea of adding the wireplanner, File Monster latest patches and TFC Central headlines... ;(

Well, if you paid for us all to have 21" screens and spinkee video cards, then you'd be able to stick shed-loads at the top of the screen! :)
By the way - yes, I click on the headlines. Although I still visit the Wireplay/Spank et all front pages anyway.
I didn't think it would be a "useful" thing and prob slow the forums down but I actually like them :)
Nice idea ;)
It shouldn't slow the forums down at all - the content is loaded in an iframe, so there are no extra requests to the forum database (which is where the performance problems lie).
Personally I don't, but I think that's mainly cos I've conditioned myself to ignore the top 1/3rd of web pages cos they're usually full of ads.
I know this is a common trait in browsers, guess its different for each person.
Heres a (sarcastic) idea, why not, instead of an iframe (which doesn't work in Netscape Navigator anyway - not that I care) how about having it float around the screen? ;)
Seriously tho, it is getting cluttered up there. Reading a topic, on 17" 1024x768 screen, literally the top half is 'junk'.
IMO of course.
the content is loaded in an iframe
They don't work in NS do they?
Nope. NS users get a bog standard gameplay logo instead.
yup i use em daily to link me to it then proceed to read all the other news.
Why not "php-include" them?
/me showing my as yet limited knowledge of php.
As utilised on YARN (http://www.clan-wars.co.uk/yarn/).

They are a good idea, but would be better if they changed colour on mouse over (like the way the forum topics turn blue when you move over them)
Not at all being picky there :)
We're not PHP including them because the forum server is on a different server from the main web server - I suppose we could have an automatic process that mvoew the headlines file over to the forum server and sticks it in a directory somewhere but this would be hassle and would also affect forum performance (not much admittedly).
Besides - netscape well and truly sucks, as anyone who tries to get a web page to work in it will tell you :P
NS sucks. There, I said it. And its true. So does v6.

You can use absolute URLs (IE the full monty - http://www.blah.com/news/october/week3/23-10.html ) in a php include you know.
That's what I do with my includes on Yarn.
<?
include("http://www.clan-wars.co.uk/yarn/historic/2000/index.htm");
?>
That's the include for the funkeh calender & menu on the left hand side.
:)
And yeah I use em when the headline interests me. :)

Mind you, so does Sar's sig.
Mofo Sar :E
Sar - if we did that then the forum script would have to wait for the web server to respond before it could render the page - if for any reason the web server failed to server it up (or was slow at all) then you'd probably get another performance hit on the forum server. I'll ask our tech guy about it though, hadn't realised you could include full URLs as well as relative paths to stuff on the same server.
Leave my sig alone bitch - it 0wnz j00 and j00 know it. ;)
And hadn't thought about it like that Skunk, so you're probably right.
