Yo!

Can anyone help?

I'm into level designing for Half-Life and I use Worldcraft 2.1 with no problem at all, but I recently switched to the newer version, Worldcraft 3, and now my levels won't build. I've made sure that all the settings are correct. Every time I build a level, Half-Life starts with a message telling me that it can't find my map.

After examining the help files, I found that the map compiler that comes with Worldcraft 3 isn't all that good and I should try and find a new one.

Where can I download a new builder, and once I download it, how do I install it?

Thanks!

Right, rule of thumb to begin with
Don't compile thru Worldcraft!!

For compiling, you'll need Zoners Half Life Tools
These are the best you can get
Get the latest version here
http://halflife.gamedesign.net/resources/zhlt.shtml

To run Zoners Tools you'll need the Compilation Controlller from here
http://www.gracelessland.com/

Note, you'll have to get used to exporting as a .map file rather than .rmf to use these tools
It's well worth it however!!

If you have any more questions about these things, ICQ me #66311789

Just started dabbling with Worldcraft without too many problems. Out of curiosity, what's the problem with using the WC compiler? Given Gwil's reply, they must be fairly notorious. Also, what are the advantages of using the other compiler/tools you mentioned?

cheers in advance

The WC compiler is crap? :)

it uses to much ram or so i here, using a external compiler means maps compile a lot faster.

(btw davej of CS mapping fame and the excellent ETC HL-SP map pack is creating a new compiling program which is made around ZHLT, http://www.planethalflife.com/davej for updates)

They produce incomplete brushes.....bad opengl rendering, bad lighting ie shadows in unshadowed plaes.......
basically, sh1te incomplete compiles with shed load of bugs.

I don't think they're quite that bad, but definitely use Zoner's: they don't hog RAM (WC compiles do, because WC is still open when you're compiling), and they have loads more options.

Before you do a final compile for a big-ass map, make sure you reboot your PC and shut down all programs like virus checkers - VIS is CPU reliant, and may take a long time depending on your processor and map complexity, but RAD is the real killer - if you don't have enough RAM, it'll NEVER complete :(
Luckily, Zoner's have a -sparse option which doesn't eat up as much RAM.

Bottom line: use Zoner's Tools :P
