View Full Version : So when do you stop being a newbie?
T^RN!$H3[)

At what point do you stop being a newbie and start becoming a normal respected member off the game playing community?
Not that I am a newbie you understand?
YCrowley
03-11-2000, 15:42
That a good question.
I don't suppose that the kind people a gameplay wouldn't mind telling us
And yes, if you must know I am a newbie.
YCrowley
03-11-2000, 15:43
I thought i was a newbie but it says I ain't so I ain't
I will however still fight for the newbies

You stop being a nooby when you stop acting like one. That means :
No spam (or at least limited use of spam, and only for humourous effect)
Willing to offer help and advice to other community members
Not pointlessly abusive
Always willing to have a laugh (although try to limit the number of times it's at someone else's expense)
Post count does go a little way towards generating respect - but it's more down to the quality of the posts than anything else. Except if you work for Gameplay, in which case you can say what you want when you want and still demand respect :)
The easiest way is to become known and respected within certain game/forum. Then expand.
Or something like that.

First of all, I only was abusive because you lot were taking the p*** out of me and other newbies.
Yes I do have an attitude, I can admit that but if you are willing to take it easier on the newbies thats OK.
If you don't I will hit back.
I do like a laugh but there is a limit to that.
I will help once I get to know PC games, reason being I only know alot about Playstation games and there going out since the PS2 was launched.
And don't forget I only got the net last week
Well, the progression from newbie to established monkee is a long and tough journey.
To start with, one needs to review their name with respect to its connotational reflection.
Ie: To start with, joo may be called:
DEATH2U.
This name SCREAMS newbie. It conjours an image of a blonde haired boy, wiv bony girl arms, whose spent hours, nay DAYs, deliberating the most effective and powerfull handle imaginable, and came up with DEATH2U. In Their fragile mind, this is a dominant, fear inducing name, suggesting that, should joo find the misfortunate to be in the same digital space as them, joo will suffer an almighty fate.
So, to ascend the ladder of respectablitly, a name change may well be required to avoid unfair pideon-holing, judgement and abuse.
By the same token however, adopting a name such as Ralph3 or Peter007 is also not advised, as this suggests the protagonist has the imagination of a small piece of lint. Given the unparralled freedom to adopt an personna imaginable, the selection of ones own name, followed by a few numbers to afford its registration is somewhat "dasadwdawdwdadwdawdwa".
Once a suitable name is achieved, the process of leavng newbie ville requires a carefully selected stratergy. Every post must have at least 1 iota of thought put into it, and one should refrain from random and vicious outburst that serve to vent the current frustration of said poster, as they struggle to adapt to their new surroundings.
Newbie posts are often indentifiable by their confrontational over-tones. Giving no thought to appropriate ettiquette, a newbie will often merely demand answers and advice, beliveing that the digital environment they occupy will simply spew back a satifactory reply. Posing a query in a polite and approachable manner will immediately ascend you from the bottom_level of newbie, in that people will not be forced to view you negatively from the off-set, and therefore attempt to help. In this way, you will recieve 'first contact' with a non-newbie, and parastically drain some status from their presence in your post.
From here, joo must continue to post with consideration, and use these posts to perpetutate whatever character joo feel joo want to portray. As long as the motives are reasonable, and joo don't concern joorself with slaggin off everythng that types, this will begin to establish your place amongst a community, and, even if people don't respond to joo, they will be watching, and ascertaining joor avatar's personality. Try to get a feel for the way the community works, what makes it tick, and what sort of content goes down well. If the community likes talkin about fish, start a post about the different types of fish, perhaps including joor particular preference to haddock. Soon joo will find like-minded haddock lovers flocking to joor expressions and nuturing them wiv similar aspirations for haddock-lans-parties.
The post count is, of course, another main consideration in the newbies developement. In a very tenuouos way, it is a reflection of joor age. Starting, surpisingly at 1, every post joo do thereafter will raise joor post count. As long as this progression doesnt pertain to overt spammage, which will do nothing but regress joor status backwards, the posts will slowly confirm joor presence and existence, and reify joor position amongst the masses. Tis perhaps best though, that joo don't place to much importance on this factor, as joo will find its an integral part of the above mentioned activites. Put the actual posts and their content BEFORE the post count and joo will find the experience much more rewarding.
As joo post more, relationships with other poster will floursih and further joor progress from anonymous "asdawdawdw" to fully fledged monkee.
Arguably the most fundamental factor in joor growth will be playing the game upon which the community joo participate in is based. In this way, joo will meet members of the community on a far more interactive basis, and this affords joo another way of increasing joor familiarity, thus dimishing joor newbieness. If joo are particullarly gude at the respective game, this will aid joo immensley, as people will usually respect ability and accept joo into their elitist secret-handshaking crew with greater ease. However, even if joor arent the l333tist bandit to begin with, just keep joor attitude and behaviour clean and spinkee, and people will react mucho better to joo. Continue to play regularly, under the same name, and soon, when joo join a game ans say "Hiiiiiiiii" joo will invariably be greeted.
Don't be afraid to ask for help in the games, but be warned, for whatever reasons, joo may not always get an appropriate answer. This situation could be as a result of a myriad of reasons, but regardless, it is not an exscuse to hurl abuse at the server and its inhabitants. The best course of action here is to continue playing, whilst harbouring a deep resentment and sweating like a baboon.
Having taken on board all of this, joo should find that wiv varying success, joo will break free from the ranks of newbieness in a reasonably short time period.
Finally some DO's and DO NOT DO'S of online participation.
DO - Think bout what joo post.
DON'T - call the moderators gay pidgeon molesters.
DO - Have respect for other memebers and don't attract confrontation for no gude reason
DON'T - make joor first thread : "Joo are ALl wILLYHEads Who EAt Skid MAkred Pants!"
DO - Learn from others
DON'T - presume that no response to joor post is an automatic signal for joo to SPAM the board wiv the same query.
DO - enojy the game and try to get as much fun out of it as possible.
DON'T - think because joo achieved something in the game, joo are now l33333t and can become an abusive, biggoted frog-bollock
DO - take alot of things wiv a pinch of salt

Kool :E
im still a newbie , having loads of posts counts for nothing :E
pure and simply, the difference between a newbie and a frag monkee is knowing what your doing. my main online fix is quakeworld, where knowing how to configure your setups to get decent playability is one of the main hurdles, followed by advanced gaming techniques such as rocket jumping, bunny hopping, learning to aim properly etc.....
actual; skill has little to do with it- i am merely average at quake but am well known and respected because of my good attitude.
one last thing- be a gracious loser `cos will lose a lot before you start to win. fs, after over a year of quake i`m still in the bottom division of the free for all league. man i suck :E

Stopped getting lost on the map.

Figure out how too use binds. :cheese:
Your name constantly appears at the top off the score board. :E
You keep getting asked to join a clan when you don't use you TAG. (get irritating after a while)

I guess the point that needs to be made is that there's different places to be a nooby.
On this forum, I'm not a nooby. But in Counterstrike (which I started playing on thursday) I'm a nooby. And fail miserably on most of the points T^RN!$H3[) mentioned above :)

The single player game is f*****g brilliant. And there are so many ways to play the game online it's rediculous. Not just Counterstrike (possibly one of the most played online games in the world ffs!), but also Action Half Life, Team Fortress Classic... the list is longer than I can remember.
I used to love Unreal Tourney.
I worship a new God now.
Make sure you get Half Life Generations. The inclusion of Opposing Force will mean even if the Online game(s) do nothing for you, the single player stuff will keep you occupied for weeks :)

I'm not a newby on NME. Old hand, but that doesn't matter (and it's quite irrelevant in here). I've always wondered why but what is all this l33333t stuff about?
I don't understand I'm afraid. I'd really like to know, as I feel rather inadequate not knowing what all this slang means. It's rather like having a fantastic group of friends but when you go down to the local in East London you can't understand a word they're saying because they're speaking a load of Jackson Pollocks.
No offense to anyone (I'm far to meek for that), I can't pretend to have the best English in the world, I just wondered, because I tried shortening down my words and using clever symbols for a while when I first came on the net, and all it seems to do is annoy people and piss them off.
Is there an onnline dictionary for all this hacker inventing talk? (for example I found Jackson Pollocks @ http://www.cockneyrhymingslang.com/ ).
Regardless wonderfull post from whoever i was that went on for ages, I love stuff like that, some people have a natural nack for explanation and that seemed very comprehensive.
Nice one.

Good question, I’m a newbe here (more a lurker really) but elsewhere I’m well know etc and I couldn’t guess how many thousands of posts I’ve made over the years. Don’t make no difference no how, as somedays I’m always going to be the newbe because there are a lot of net pensioners out there ;)
I’d go with mr_grumpy_man when he said part way to dropping the label is when you contribute something useful back on a regular basis.
But then m-g-m said “Not pointlessly abusive” gee I thought it was net traditional to go get Gates? <vbg>
I disagree it’s about message counts, you can chat with someone with a million post and someone with 10, and you can tell who’s the net savvy one and who’s the real newbe.
It goes back to this being useful, you know, being part of it and not an outsider full of yak. You don’t have to be an expert mind you, just yourself and all that. Not trying to prove yourself, and getting that respect that Bandito talks about. What he says make a lot of sense!

14-11-2000, 13:43
Seeing a clan tag on someone’s name must be of some use though I would have thought to some, especially newbies.
If your playing online enough to want to join a group, then you’ll be getting help from the rest of the clan in your playing skills too. And newbies always need help to start with. :)
-=V3NG3^NC3=-
14-11-2000, 15:01
Your missing the point m8, if you put your clan tag on your username and you leave the clan and join a new one your still going to have the old clan tag on your name unless you re-register. Now do you see? :rolling:
mr_grumpy_man
14-11-2000, 15:11
If you ask a forum admin kindly (like our glorious test-posting/general chatting source of eeeeevel Mister666) then they can change your nick for you.
I'd say a clan tag is a positive thing, because at least it shows some kind of competance in a competitive game as well as implying they're not a complete nooby :cheese:
-=V3NG3^NC3=-
14-11-2000, 15:36
You still don't get it do you dumb-ass! You can put your tag in your siggy. I agree being in a clan is a good thing, and you should wear your clan tag with pride just don't put it on your username on the forums!!!

[DS]Xenomorph
14-11-2000, 16:59
Why don't you? At least then it shows some pride and comitment to your clan? Should i ever leave DS i can quite easily ask the forum admins to change my name and they prolly would.

I take your point about clan tags being needing to be changed in names, but as I wrote earlier I don’t see the number of messages a person posts as making them a newbies or not.
If admin can change your user name then the problems sorted, so I personally see it more of an inconvenience really.
