The problem being; how do you define someone as a am or pro? In fact, no CS player is a pro unless they make a living from it. That is pretty much impossible in this country, and even in America CS doesn't win you big prizes(well, maybe...). So, for all CS players at the tournament last weekend, CS is a hobby. Therefore they are all amateurs, some just happen to be damn good. If you wanted to introduce divisions for CS clans that would make more sense, but for a one-day tournament like the ones at LAN Arena this isn't really feasible. So, solution? Just practice until your hands go numb and you can no longer stand up right, then you might beat the H&SD players. On the other hand, wait til they go into the toilet then run in after them with a mask on and break all their fingers. Urrr, joke, yeah, that's it, I'm joking...

This is the sort of debate that one day formulates a future for our "hobby".

Pubicus and Gazelle are both right. There is a need for events in the Uk to be accessible to all types of gamers, from newbies, amateur and professional. It is something that we are looking at, indeed, today I sat with 15 highly influential people in the PC and Games industry to discuss exactly that.

It is not easy to work out a structure that will cater for hard core gamers (that may consider themselves good enough to go Pro) and also the wider market (the amateurs). We dont want to alienate either side of the skill barrier and want to provide entertainment where some enter to prove themselves the best in the country while others enter for a good laugh and a day out. After all - we all love gaming yea?

We believe that we are not that far away - the first national league structure will happen in January. In the mean time, please use this string to discuss any of your ideas / thoughts / dreams and worries of how gaming could develop.

After all, you will be in it next year.

Oh, and we now have our FIRST womens team entered for the CS tournament in December, so Sparky, your dream may come true!!!

well i'd suggest a dual elimination system cos it really does seem harsh to have a group of 4 guys travel a long way to have their asses kicked and go out in the 1st round

either that our a setup similar to the champions league in footy.....6 or so groups with 6 or so clans, all play each other, top 2 go thru

would take a long time but maybe you could start on friday nite and finish sunday?

I do however have a serious poin to make. Taking into account other peoples views it seeems like some kind mini-qualifing league is wanted before a kinda knockout stage. So how about having 8 pools of 4 clans, each playing one another once and the top clan of each league progressing to the knockout stage. Now, i believe, you have the facilities to play 3 matches at once, so even quite efficient in turn around it will take around 8 HOURS to complete the first stage. This suggests that maybe a two day tournament is on the cards - the people who got knocked out would still get 3 ace games of CS and have a cool day without think "S**T! I travelled all this way to get my arse spanked in the 1st round" and the lucky winners get to have another go the next day. Now, if you somehow managed to get the facilities to play 4 games at once the league stage would take (mental cogs whirring) 6 hours (plus a bit for turn around after each game) so if you stared at 11 the knockout bit would begin at roughly 5.30 - 6.00. Plenty of time to complete the tourney in one day. Phew! What's everyone think huh? huh?

I too like the idea of a "qualifying" round in the form of the Champs league. I have come up with 3 ideas, let me know what you think on each:

1) What do you think of having that done before the tournament day - but online? And then have the winners of the online tournament meet at lanarena for LAN play?

2) Either that or a 2 day event - but then where would the winners stay overnight? If lanarena was to book a hotel for all the winners to stay (that would be 64 of you!) would you want the entry fee for everyone to go up to compensate or would the winners be expected to pay their accomo (at a much reduced rate) if they got through?

3) Another idea would be to have 16 teams play at their local Lanarena (Nottingham and Bristol then Newcastle, Birmingham and Maidenhead should be up this year) and then the winners of the local rounds play each other across the 2MB leased lines installed at each site?
