Recently my computer has started performing very badly in games, with pings fluctuating around 200 - 400, and really crackling sound (often so bad the sound is lost in UT), which isn't just limited to games, even sound from the CD-Roms in being crackled.

I think the problem started when a network card was installed (I am accessing the net via the network, and have been told I should have a stable ping of around 50). I have reinstalled tons of drivers to try and fix it but to no avail. I have also disabled every program running in the background, but it has no effect.

The system is:

Pentium III 600 MHz
200 MB RAM
Voodoo3 2000 AGP
SBPCI64 Sound
SMC EZ Card 10/100

I have also noticed at least 4 sytem devices are using the same IRQ.

Hi there,

Are you playing of a LAN at work then ???? if so is there any security software in place ?

Soundwise, dunno m8. Is the sound alright if you are playing offline ?

Playing from our Uni's ResNet, a m8 says he was getting pings of 23, and everyone else seems to be fine.

The sound is always doing this, especially when the HDD is being accessed, or a system work load goes up.

Hi there,

Well, hard to say really. Could be a network problem. Depending how the network is set up you can have problems depending where you are on the network. This is what im told, in particuler if you are on a Novell run network, something to do with LAN traffic to certain sockets ....
Ive been a victim of that myself in fact. Otherwise, perhaps try an alternative Network card. And make sure the card is configured for optimal performance.

Padstar.

its a network called JANET, and the people next door seem to be fine ... it is most probably a hardware confict, finding tho will be a problem.
