Lets all try and contribute any ideas that can help the Rookies

OK :) Have you all discovered that you cant really explore the maps or practise in offline mode, without getting blasted by the offline opposition.
And you cant practise online or explore, because you've then got real pilots shooting yer butt :E

But you can praccy online on yer own........if you download gamevoice share prog,(SEE OTHER THREAD FOR LINK) after installing and setting up, click on start chat, then host options, then start game. You will then get a choice of all the microsoft games that you have installed, crimson will of course be in that list. You can launch the game from clicking on crimson.
Once you are in the game lobby, you can choose how long you want to play, and which map.
This will give you all the maps from multiplayer, with the rearming hangars as well (something you dont get in offline mode) but you will be able to launch game on your own. If you crash, then you'll end up back in the game lobby, so just relaunch again.
This will help to familiarise you with the diffent maps, make it easy to explore, (especialy going down the tunnels) and also to practise flying into the rearming hangars.

Tip 2 Try and dogfight in the vicinity of the rearming hangar, so if you get partly damaged, you can just nip through the hangar repair damage and rearm. Beware though that if someone has just gone through, the hangar door will slam shut after them, which means you gotta hang around for about ten seconds before it opens up again. It is posible to follow someone through, closely on their tail, and for you both to be able to rearm and repair at the same time.

Tip 3 If your customising......wait until you get to mission 11, because you then get much better choice of more powerful engines, guns, etc, and youl'll have more money to buy em :)

That'll do fer now folks, have fun :D

RE: tip 2, you can be really sneaky and follow whoever your chasing through, if u r close enuf you can just get through the 2nd door :) and if yer in a hoppy you can fly around inside quite comfortably until the doors open :)

Didn't know you got repaired when you fly through the rearming depot... coo the things you miss when you don't read the manual :emb:

Speaking as someone who hasn't flown a flight simulator since Falcon on the Amiga (no tell a lie I used to play Red Baron on my 286 quite a lot) have you lot got any general flight and manoeuvre tips?

My questions are as follows:

Is it better to attack an enemy from above?
What ways can you try and shake an opponent who has managed to slot into the same turning curve as you?
You're flying along and an opponent flashes across your view. Obviously you're not going to be able to latch on to their tail due to them flying roughly perpendicular to you - so what's the best way to try and get in a good position to rip their tail to shreds?
In team play you come across a team mate spraying bullets towards one of the opposition, is there a protocol to say you should leave them to it, or should you pile in and help flak that mother to the deck?
Should I ban people from the messageboards who constantly kick my ass in-game :E (j/k - if I did that there'd be no-one here)

If we can get enough tips and help in I'll knock up a newbie doc for the CS website.
(Good call RK btw ;) )

1 I find it's always better to attack when the other plane is at a 45 degree angle to your own planes intended path, in particular a climbing enemy plane presents a good surface area of target, especialy if your own plane is on or near the horizontal in flight, whether banking or level.
Swooping down, and following through is another good attack.
Try to avoid head to heads (especialy in hopolite) unless you have configured a good armour on the nose end, when you customised. Remember to shoot ahead of your victims flight path, so that he flys into your bullets or rockets, unless of course he is immediately in front of you on a level flight course.

2 Its amazing how much more can be achieved by easing back on the throttle in some situations, but equally so if your plane has nitro boost, save the boost until you really do need that extra speed (press N for nitroboost) only engines after mission 10 offer the nitro boost option, bear in mind that the faster engines are heavier, which may mean less hardpoints, or less armour, your choice more speed less armour, or more armour less speed.

3 It is incredibaly easy to latch on to any ones tail at
any time in...........the hopolite :E

4 In teams (death match) if your partners are engaged already then let them finish the kill, after all one well aimed rocket can kill outright, so your best bet is to find your own target, however always continously toggle for who is your nearest enemy plane, even after you may have already partialy damaged one plane, if theres a better target then go for it, You can even sometimes still catch the original one and finish him off.
If someone is making for the rearming hangar, then its a sure sign they are badly damaged and/or out of ammo. GO FOR THEM right to the last second of them going through the hangar door, even try a long range rocket shot, you'd be amazed how often this can lead to succesive kills. Also be prepared to hit them as they come out of the hangar, most peeps mistakenly climb as they come out.......wahoooo what a good target they give. Its possible to get them with one well aimed rocket as they climb.

5 THE SPY GLASS VIEW or to those of us who play air attack the f4 view, unlike air attack i keep the spy glass view on all the time, you can see where your enemy is, whose the nearest, and when they turn, all the information you need to be one step ahead, toggle with this switch and it gives you rearming base direction and then nearest enemy alternatively, i'm toggling with this one switch continously whilst playing.
I think we all realise that the best cockpit view is the one where you have max outside view, with no cabin obstructions and just your dials showing.

Happy hunting :D

didn't know u could switch the spy glass off tbh :)

most of what kite said is true but height difference in CS isn't terribly important. Ever stalled?

turning? who needs to just fly a warhawk, the bullets bounce off :)

Its ALWAYS better in team dm to go for somebody who is unmarked tbh. It increases the chances of getting both kills :)

THE POWERSLIDE. In order to execute a powerslide, drop yer throttle to idle, let your airspeed fall down to under two thirds of your maximum speed (about 200 knots in a devastator for example). As you decelerate, roll your lift line over into the direction you wish to turn. Once you've decelerated, peg your throttle wide open and bury the joystick in yer lap. You'll pull some serious G's, and your tail will actually slide out of your flight path as you pull through up to 90 degrees in the blink of an eye.
You'll continue at your increased turn rate for as long as you see the smoke trailing out of your straining engines exhausts. After your tail stops sliding, you'll return to a standard turn rate. Therefore this maneuver is best used at the beginning of a turn fight to enable you to snap the nose around on your enemy before he can begin to get his break towards you.

THE SPYGLASS If your using the spyglass to find a target, scroll through the enemies until you find an easy kill with its tail toward you. Because the spyglass shows an image of the enemy aircraft, you can use it for more than just a turn cue. By visualizing the relative orientations of your aircraft and the target, you can develop a three dimensional picture of the tactical situation. This is very important when you're faced with multiple enemies and need to keep track of who's coming around on your tail. :)

PLANES....

Bloodhawk : Breathtakingly fast and features the best turn radius of all conventional planes.

Kestrel : Boasts heavy payload carrying capabilities and a rear gun turret.

Warhawk : Only slightly less payload than the Balmoral, yet provides greater speed and maneuverability.

Devastator : The best all round air frame, capable of doing everything reasonably well without excelling in any one capacity.

Hopolite : A very low stall speed and the tightest turn rating make these autogyros the best choice for tight spots.

Have to agree. The Hopolite is the ultimate for Deathmatch just lousy for anything else.

hey kite, i know i'm a thick BT engineer, but i can't get that online solo praccy tip to work, it kept asking me for a team name and when i created it, it said needs another player in the other team, where can u select 1 player?

You need the gamevoice software download, set up the gamevoice, open it up, click on "start chat" click on "host options" then click on "start game" then click on "crimson".
You must be online though when you do it. :)

GOOD LUCK :D

already did that :( it makes me join/create a team and then says "each team must have at least one player" i can't seem to deselect the number of teams, do you have that option?:bigcry:

Ok..........i've just tried it again in case it was a flukey, and it works just as i explained. But remember that you launch the game from gamevoice, ie from desktop select gamevoice, open up, and click "start chat".
But....... in the gameroom lobby where you can select the different maps are you choosing CTF in mission selection or DM, if you're choosing CTF it will expect there to be more than one player, but you can succesfully launch on your own under Deathmatch mission, (cos i just done it) Dont forget though that if your plane crashes whilst in the game, then instead of respawning it will return you to the game lobby (where you select plane, ammo, and missions) its then a simple task to just relaunch, the whole process from plane crashing and getting back into another game for more praccy is only about a minute, which i reckon is well worth the effort to be able to explore these vast maps, do stunts, and praccy flying into the rearming hangars.
BTW if you shoot the space rocket (positioned upright) in the hollywood map then it takes off, in quite remarkable style, with brilliant graphics.

If at first you dont succeed...................:E
