View Full Version : whats the setup knockout or mini-league?
Just posting a message to get the ball rolling(it's been a bit quiet on this board)I've been to the LanArena website but the details are a bit sketchy on what the setup going to be, is it going to be one game and its all over knockout -if you lose that is, or will qualification for the next round be over a number of games and which maps will we be playing? anyway it would be great if other people post some messages cause I'm feelin lonely
I'm open to suggestions - a duel elimination knock-out tournament is likely to be on the cards if we have over 100 entrants, giving everyone 2 chances. If less then a mini-league will be adopted.
As far as maps go again this will be your tournament with a lot of money up for grabs - what maps do you want?

I'm replying to my own thread ,I feel so pathetic ah well anyhoo Morpheus pleaseeeeeee oh and deck 16,I'm not spectacularly good at them but they're always good for a laugh
How's it going FRAGGED, finally signed myself up. I notice that you have 20 posts. Who's been a busy boy then.
Good to see you posted something informative rather than a kop out rhetorical question, which could of been done on the general postings forum(Rambly Shambly is my current nonsense thread)- Am I being padantic? Anyway it took you long enough to join up, but I welcome your arrival on this bleak and lonely outpost. Dom how many people have signed up to this event and do they know how to use a forum? Why can't CS be my first love at least that way you get a bit of pre-tornament banter.
Are the maps only the standard ones? or are there going to be bonous pack maps, inoxx?
I would prefer just the standard ones
In the deuls will the maps have to have a recomended player limit for 2-??. Or just anymap?
I have to agree there I think it would be better to stick to the standard maps -due to the fact that I haven't played the others yet.

well, here are the maps i recommend (ie the ones you see played online most).
FFA DM:
deck16][
liandri
phobos
turbine
arcane-temple
curse][
tempest
codex
pressure
gothic
cybrosis][ (at a pinch)
1v1:
deck (most peoples' favourite)
liandri
turbine
tempest
stalwartXL
phobos
hyperblast
grinder (at a pinch)
codex
maps not recommended for FFA:
conveyor
peak (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
zeto (very spammy)
stalwartXL
kgalleon
healpod
barricade (it can be ok, but most people dont like it)
malevolence (no one plays it)
maps absoloutely not recommended for 1v1s:
any map with only 1 or 2 weapons on (unbalances towards certain playing styles)
these being:
oblivion
fractal
morbias
fetid
pyramid
and other maps not recommended for 1v1:
pressure (much 2 sprawling)
peak (no one likes it)
barricade (same reason as pressure)
curse (same again)
gothic (same)
UT is a lot more tactically based than say, Q3A, most people dislike the small no-brainer maps intensly, as they detract so much from UT. the maps which people enjoy most are those which arent huge (so that they cant find their opponents), but fairly large.
Larger maps also accomodate a larger variety of playing styles, making the game fairer for everyone, rather than pigeon holing players into a single style (which they arent as good at).
it may be less exciting to watch the larger, more tactical matches, but its 99999999 x more fun to play, trust me :E
I agree with most of your map choices except, that there are a few bonus pack maps in there.

most servers have bonus pack maps in rotation, and 95% of UTers know em, if they arent included it means that they'll be running a bit low on maps - so they will probably decide to use some awful maps to fill it out a bit (eg fractal and morbias)

Spot on Hades....except I would like to see Conveyor on the list instead of Hyperblast. I put Hyperblast in the same category as Zeto.
One thing that is a must though. NO REDEEMER.
Ok I love duels so here is my list of the maps I think should be played:
Agony- Classic
Codex- Classic
Deck16- Classic
Grinder
Malevolence- Classic 1 on 1 map
Morbias- Although shock kings will say no ;)
Tempest
Turbine- Classic
Maps I think suck:
Fractal- Too small
DM-Gothic- Too big
HealPod][- Complete rubbish, was better in Unreal
KGalleon- Terrible map
Morpheus- Anti Gravity sucks
SpaceNoxx- ditto
Peak- Stupid map
I'd like to see a knock out tournament. Much more exciting! :)
As for settings, I think Weapon stay should be off, Power ups off, and no redeemer! :)

all nice ideas
however all the options can lead to endless possibilites of gameplay
i would like weapon stay ON like in FFA
and i prefer Barricade over D16 etc etc
but we cant all have what we want
Playing with weapon stay off brings more skill and knowledge into the game. You have to be good with all weapons to play in a weapon stay off duel, if not the more skillful player will always win.
Running away is also an art and is needed more in weapon stay off duels.

'...if not the more skillful player will always win...'
isnt that the idea? :)
id rather win a map on skill alone than lose by someone running around nicking all the weapons
just my opinion

Your point is?

Heh heh, I take it you don't play much DM and haven't played Quake3? By playing with weapon stay off, a smart player can beat a more skilled player by simply out smarting them. Skill + Intelligence = great player ;)

Definately weapon stay ON.
No matter what your opinion is, it is what is played on almost all the servers on the Net. So that is what the 'standard'is, and we should be playing 'standard' UT.
(To contradict myself Redemeer should be off)
We're not talking about CTF, we're not talking about Domination, we're not talking about FFA DM, we're talking about duel DM.
The "standard" for duel DM are the settings I gave.

Sorry to burst your bubble. But nowhere has it been mentioned that this tourny is Duel.
In fact it is implied that it is FFA with duel at the end since this is meant to be the follow up to the one early last summer.

It looks like it will definately start FFA so Im happy as Im already known as the FFA king on LAN :P
Gotta be ws on but powerups on or off, Im actually not bothered, with them off its just full scale fighting, with them on I suppose its more skillful controlling the powerups.
In duel, I prefer playing ws off, and Powerups especially shield off.
I always praccy on NGI duel servers and always turn ws off as its far more skillful and if u can work out that your opponent likes shock for example, just keep getting it yourself.
As for maps, Hyperblast is one of my faves, but only if powerups are on, otherwise its dull.
Playing on Malevolence yesterday, its a great 1v1 map!
Yeah playing with WS off is much better and it forces your opponent not to camp.
And like you said Malevolence rules.
What I'd really like to know is if it will only be the top two scorers? If it is, I think it's kind of lame...... and you might not be so lucky this time around Creepy :D

ws on for ffa and off for duel, no redemer and powerups for both I think.
I think their should only be a few maps so people can learn them well.
1 or 2 FFA maps and a Max of 4 duel maps would be good.
The standard of play would be better if people practice these more and also would remove the luck element of getting a map u rule at and someone else sucks at.
I don't think they will give a list of maps before the event. They seems to just want to surprise us with every thing. :(

Anyone know any Duel servers where I can actually turn off the powerups, I usually use NGI ones cos u can vote and turn WS off, but the powerups are on and its really annoying!
