I'm looking to get a new cheap AMD Duron Processor, and I was wonderring what motherboard would be best for it. I intend to be transferring most components from my current p200 system over to it, including 64mb of 100mhz ram. But memory is quite cheap atm so going for a 133mhz motherboard is an option. Anyway anyone's advice would be greatly appriciated.

Go for an Abit KT7 Raid if you can afford it, if not, the Abit KT7.

The only reall difference is one is UDMA 33/66/100 and the other is UDMA 33/66

You can use your 64mb of PC100 RAM in this board too, but if you get any extra PC133, it will only run at 100MHZ with the 64mb in. (because it has to run at the lowest speed of any RAM you have)

I hope this helps!

BTW, go here (http://http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_OcUK_Mobo_CPU_cooler_Bundles_29.html) for some GREAT bundles, Duron 800 (guaranteed to 1ghz+), FOP32-1 cooler and Abit KT7-Raid for £240.64.

Not bloody bad for an upgrade from a 200 to 1ghz system! :)

thanks for that, I kinda thought my p200 was gettong a bit sluggish :E

Okay so am I right to say that getting one of these fangles RAID motherboards has a lot more overclokcing options?

Also, I've been looking at overclocker.co.uk and theoverclockingstore.co.uk and if I ordered one of these bundels from either of them, would it come pre assembled?

thnaks a lot :)

The KT7-RAID does make clocking v simple as it can all be done through the bios.

The "Overclockers" bundles are definitely not pre-built- & i doubt whether the "theoverclockers" bundles would be either.

It's not too difficult to assemble & the manual for the KT7-RAID is very comprehensive. The only problem u may have is fitting the fan on the cpu.

i'm afraid not, it's very risky sending them preassembled through the post without a LOT of extra packaging (the heatsink/fan would be likely to damage the CPU/socket during transit.

it's not to hard to assemble them, lookhere (http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/athlon/howtobuild/socket_proc_install_guide.html)

and here (http://www.dansdata.com/coolers.htm) for more info

i got my cpu/mobo/ram from scan
they had slotted the ram and cpu into the mobo and then put it back into its box :)

u just had to put the fan on :O

Okay, I'll have a look at this scan shop/thingy..anyone got an address :E ?

/me looks fowards to the thought of overclocking through the bios :)

So if i have to set the system up myself, how difficult is it? I've quite happily installed PCI cards and ram before, but this is a lot more complex :O

What kind of electrostatic precautions do i need to take?

Cheers

lo chef

longtime no see :)

http://www.scan.co.uk is the addy, and i also got a KT7, duron 650 and some new ram abouta month ago from them.
i have had a few problems with random physical memory dumps though, but otherwise its a fine system.

ello PKL, completely off topic :E , but how are you doing? What games you playing now ?

Anyway, I'm looking at getting this lovely bundle from overclockers, its called a Tornado Ice Box. Here are the specs:
- Coolercase Tornado
- Macron 300W AMD approved power supply
- Abit KT7-RAID motherboard
- AMD Duron 800 guaranteed to 1GHz+
- Globalwin FOP38 CPU cooler
- Arctic Silver (small contact area)

They're asking £370 inc vat. Does that sound like a good deal to anyone ?

Thanks a lot :)

The deal sounds good.

And I'd go for it 'cept for one thing...I want the ASUS A7V and not the Abit.

See the ASUS is a better motherboard. Unless you want the RAID option, I'd recomend the Asus over the Abit.

Also, sell your RaM, and buy some Crucial PC133 128, from overclockers.co.uk(not an ad....honest!)

By the way...Wolf 'bite' if you read this, why don't OCUK do a 'tornado' bundle with the Asus?
And before OCUK used to sell Corsair Ram, now it's Crucial...is there any difference?

cheers,

Trayn.
