I set up a two comp network using 100mb pci ethernet cards and cabling.
I can share files
But I cant get Q3 working.
I start game on one comp.
The game shows up on the other comp
When I try to join it locks up immediately

I only have one cd for game [in start up comp] -could this be problem.
My question:
What is the best way to set up a two comp network for playing Q3
What is the best protocol to use
Keep it simple -Im new to this.
Thx
AND-when I use the network cards why does my mouse stop moving for a millisec every 3 or 6 secs

Install TCP/IP and IPX, and try playing across both of them.
Do other games work?
Are you both running the same version, i.e. the most recnet - 1.17a?
Umm, the CD thing, start the game on the server machine, then move the CD to the other machine, just to make sure its not that.

Not good m8, try and DL the latest drivers for the card, and re-install the NICs.

Good advice from YBW there, if when you d'load the lates drivers it doesn't help, it sounds like the NIC's could be incompatible with something else in your system either Motherboard, Graphics card, Sound card, Modem etc....

Have a look on the manufacturers website for a compatibility list.

One last thing Q3 doesn't need the CD to run networked, and the most reliable protocol to use is TCP/IP. If you need some help setting up TCP/IP, post again.

One of the most common causes of this is that Q3 is set to internet on multiplayer make sure it and the host are using LAN setting.
Go to internett connections and set it to never dial a connection this should at least let you get into the multiplayer section of Q3 to change it to LAN, if this doesnt do the trick come back ill help further. Like i said this is one of the most common reasons though.

I had exactly the same prob with Q3 and Q2...

As Arian says ... set it to Lan settings and configure iot never to dial internet... My problem was exactly the same and it solved it (ish I still get probs occassionally pretty sure I need to uninstall entire network jobby and reinstall)

Knock off a few copies (for LAN purposes only ;) or get a crack - sorted it for me :)
I would reccommend using IPX as the packets are smaller and is all you need for a LAN, with TCP/IP, you waste loads of throughput in addressing that you just don't need on a LAN.
......TCP/IP is easier though :D

On each comp run a DOS command prompt and typ C:\PING 127.0.0.1 this is the loop back address which will test if TCP/IP is bound correctly to both NIC's the Type PING xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx where x = other machines IP address. Are both machines in the same subnet? and have IP addresses in the same address range? Are you using just IP or do you have NetBios installed?
