Get tweak UI. It is on the win98 cd or you can get it from here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsme/guide/tweakui.exe
This is the very latest version. Within it will let you change several settings including a logon section which you can input your logon password so it auto runs. Yo ucan also kill the daft win98 start up screens.

Or if the password is just blank it should just go straight through? Delete the username.PWL files from your \WINDOWS\ directory restart you will be asked for a username and password click OK the PC should never ask you for a password again. But get a copy of power tools as above they're a must have :)

I wouldn't do either of those things, no disrespect, I would DISABLE the network card in Device Manager, just enable it when required. I would then change the network logon from Microsoft Client for Networks (or whatever) to the standard Windows Logon.

You will see a massive difference in your boot up speed, one of the things your PC is currently doing is trying to restore network connections, which if your PC isn't currently on a network will slow things down considerably.

I hope this helps;)

doh! why didn't I think of that? see that Biggest D'st is not just a pretty face, still get them power tools though they give you loads of good features for tweaking the UI :)

If you use tweak UI you can as ive posted above do away with the windows animation upon start up this will do exactly as he wanted ie speed things up.

yeah right

but having an nic installed will slow the machine down any way on boot with or with out logos,

The ONLY way to truly make a big difference is to disable as per Big D post

if its a pci pnp card u can re-enable it at any time u want it and u wano't have to reboot to use it

SO are you saying that if he leaves the windows logon screen splashes in place that it doesnt slow the machine down then ??

The windows splash screen does not slow down or speed up the booting sequence. However, I prefer to not see that annoying Windows 98 Startup screen, so I disabled it in my msdos.sys section (don't play with this file unless you know what you are doing). But it does not speed up the loading time (not by enough to me really noticeable anyway). By disabling the logon procedure for the NIC, as Big D mentioned, should speed it up.

You don't have to disable the NIC to speed things up, just specify your own IP address in the properties for TCP/IP for the NIC (not the dial up adapter). This way it doesn't spend ages trying to resolve it's own IP on startup.

I have my IP as something like 192.43.38.4 and subnet mask as 255.255.255.0 , and boot into windows in around 10 secs using normal windows logon instead of client for microsoft networks.

i have 2 nic's in my main machine (because it acts as a proxy for my lan to share a cable modem), and it boots in about 20 seconds (if that).

i think the best IP's to give your lan machines are ones in the range
192.168.0.1 to 192.168.255.255 as these are not used on the internet (they are reserved for lans).
with the subnet mask 255.255.255.0

all my machines have their NIC's IP addresses specified manually.

the only one i have not specified is the NIC connected to my cable modem (that is assigned by NTL).
