Right tried linking two hubs together last night one hub is a 10/100 with a uplinkport and the other is a 10base-T with no uplink port I plugged in a standard piece of cable into the uplink port and into port one on the other hub but the PC's can't see each other? Can't I use 10/100 and 10Base-T hubs together? Cheers Guys looks like my 6 peeps LAN session is a no go tonight :(

Birdy m8, I was in the same position a couple of months ago, and the answer is a CROSSOVER CABLE. You cannot connect the hubs with a standard Cat 5 patch cable. Get yaself down to Maplins and get yaself one, a 1metre one will cost you £4.99

Have fun at the LAN m8 ;)

Oh and by the way they look exactly the same so don't get them mixed up afterwards only a dickhead would.....

:bonce: Doh!

Cheers mate, but one of the hubs has an uplink port with a little button next to it that lets the port be a link or normal, doesn't this just do the x-over inside the hub for you?

Ta for your help guys....

Wouldn't trust that Birday m8, to know for definite, get yaself a crossover cable.

The uplink port just means it's optimised for more throughput than normal usually, nothing else.

looks like you guys are right as always found this on some techie web site:
When do I choose Crossover or Straight-Through cable ?

When do I choose Crossover or Straight-Through cable ?

Port ---- Device - Port ----- Cable
Normal - Hub ---- Normal - Crossover
Normal - Hub ---- Uplink -- Straight
Normal - NIC ------------- Straight
Uplink -- Hub ---- Normal -- Straight
Uplink -- Hub ---- Uplink -- Crossover
Uplink -- NIC ------------- Crossover

yeah mate. you would be needing a crossover cable or if ur really up2 the job you can snip the end off of one of them, wire it up exactly the same as the other end which should be

(i think)

all u do is have one end as above and the other as

brown stripe

i think thats correct, of course you be needing a couple of RJ45's 2
