It seems that there is a lot of tests that have been done showing that the P4 is actually slower than an Athlon and in some tests slower than a P3, even though it runs a lot higher clock speed.
It seems a lot of talk is out saying that perhaps the results will be better once things are written for it, well to me that sounds more like a RISC based processor. I also can't believe that some of the gaps can be closed up as much as they've been opened in certain tests.
Athlons are taking over now... I don't think the P 4's will be very successful

Intel is a huge company with a lot of power so it won't be long before they shall we say persuade companies to add optimisations and they even talked to madonion who make 3dMark to talk them into adding the optimisations that P4 needs in there next version, tilting the scales maybe? :(
As it stands the P4 has an absolutely pants x87 floating point abilities and they've put all there eggs into SSE2's abilities and programmers making use of it.
With the cost of a new case, psu, mobo, dual ram, fecking expensive processor and then there going to change the design of the P4 early next year so you'll need another mobo if you want to upgrade I say AMD 0wnz them badly and probably will do till we reach late 2001 when it's like the P4 will be at silly speeds and SSE2 will of been used in more apps :)
For a great article that really goes in depth take a look at Tom's Hardware (http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/00q4/001120/index.html) then a revision (http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/00q4/001122/index.html) he made to one of the benchmarks which turned the previous result on it's head and the AMD stomping the P4 and it's 200mhz slower :E

Yeah read TH's review on it.
I wouldn't go for it, speeding **** loads for something which can be beaten for a lot less.
RDRAMS are too expensive, maybe when they bring out the DDR version then it might get a bit better.
As it stands I reckon my next change will be to a Athlon 1Ghz+ and 760 chipset.

has to be said, amd will be the big hitter of 2001.
the p111 is at its limit at 1ghz whilst the athlon will no doubt be hitting 2ghz within a year
the p4 sounds like it will be good once the designers have ironed out the bugs, prolly leapfrogging over amd by the end of next year....
*me remembers being jealous of my m8`s amd k6-3-450(only a year ago)*
such is the pace of development................
