OK peeps, thinking hats on - I'm having problem with my desktop at home and I'm just about out of options...

I have a fairly standard set up with a SupraExpress 56i modem which was working fine until about a month or two ago... Basically, my computer dials my ISP, the two modems communicate for a while and then my ISP drops the connection. Odd behaviour.

It's difficult to pin down what's causing it, because a few things have changed since it was working. I worked on the assumption it was a problem with the modem so uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them - still no luck. I tried changing PCI slots and still no joy.

I've tried installing a different ISP but when it calls up to set up an account, it disconnects me. I've even gone the whole hog, formatting the hard drive and reinstalling windows from scratch. It's still doing the same thing.

Faulty modem? That's what I thought, but I've taken it to a friends PC and it's worked there. Faulty lead? Nope - I've tried other leads and exactly the same happens. The ISP's not at fault either - it works on other computers (not in the house unfortunately :) )

I'm well and truly stuck for answers. The only other factors are external: We've recently changed from a Cable Phone (NTL/Cable and Wireless), we've recently changed to a new case (power supply blew up on the old AT case so we got a new ATX case instead) and we've also recently had Sky Digital installed. I know they're long shots but with everything I've tried, I think you'll understand ;)

Any suggestions as to what it may be or how to fix it: greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

you getting a noisy line on the phone? could be that...

could be that you need to enable cLID usually by prefixing the number with 1470, xxxxxxxxxx (put the whole number in the main box and leave the dialing code bit blank)

long shot, but its worth a try...

Thought about line noise but then tried another computer on the line and... it works.

I'll give the 1470 thing a try though, cheers for that.

Well it continued to play up, I took it to a friend to fix (he works in a store) and after a bit of playing with it, he replaced the modem (for a different model though I reckon the same model wouldve done.... still, not bad for a 2 year old modem ;) and it's working now.

Must've been some sort of intermittent fault with the modem. Just thought I'd let you know ^_^

Cheers!

Hope you got it fixed, but the prob you may have been having is down to the ex c&w network. That is if it is a PDH system(the telephone network) you have to disable the v90 on your modem and use 56k. It's something to do with the timing source for pdh causing your pc not to handshake. You can get c&w or ntl to get a network engineer out to change the line card parameters on the transmit and receive levels. This hopefully will shed some light on it for you.
