Just started mapping and very impressed to see you're the brains behind de_vegas. Out of curiosity, roughly how long did it take you to make, from conception to finished first version?

Also, I know peeps only do this for fun/fame(?), but (a) how did you end up getting your map included with C-Strike, (b) when the map altered between recent patches, did you or the mod authors make the changes, and (c) now the mod has gone on sale as a stand-alone game, do you get any royalities!!!?

hehe - your nosily,

:)

No probs: de_vegas took about 2 months from conception to finish. I sketched the layout out on the train home from Uni last summer, then over the holidays I worked on putting the plan into WC. The main layout was done within a couple of weeks. R_speed reduction took another week or so. Then it was adding all the details, which was pretty time-consuming. I also had to wait for my texture artist to finish all the custom textures - so it was probably about a month of fairly intense work, followed by another month of on-off production and polishing up.

It got into CS b7 because I already had cliffe and Goose on ICQ because of es_trinity, so once I'd finished vegas, I just sent them a message about it - and thankfully, they both liked it.

As for changes, I'm the only one who touches the map - I still have full creative control over it. So whenever it gets altered, it's me that does it.

Before CS v1, Valve contacted me about purchasing the rights to sell de_vegas for a lump sum of $1500. I of course leapt at the chance, and they sent me all the relevant paperwork, which I signed and sent back. However, it all fell through at the last minute, and they decided they didn't want to buy it after all :(
I'm still not sure exactly why, but I think it might have just been that they couldn't afford to purchase the rights to all the CS maps, so they had to choose only the best. So in answer to your question, no, I haven't received a penny for de_vegas, as it wasn't included in the retail version, only the DL version.

But like the Murphy's, I'm not bitter :P

Sorry to hear you never got the added bonus of some well-deserved dosh - still, I'm sure it's very rewarding to see your maps being played and enjoyed by thousands.

Thanks for the reply :)
