Any voice coms should be avoided on a 56k modem - they just dont have the bandwidth to handle it.

Gamevoices are excellent though - I got one and use it on a LAN with normal latencies (10-15 depending on game). Top quality gear - all i need now is cable to come round my way so that i can use it on the net ...

Voice comms really make a difference in games, even if you do take a hit in latency it's often worth it.

Here's my advice:
[list] Buy a cheap headset like the Trust Multi-Function Headset (£5).

Download either Teamsound (excellent), Battlecom (made by the same people as the Gamevoice software) or Roger Wilco (very easy to use). They're all free.

Get all your m8s to start using your selected voice comms program. They're far more likely to do this if it's free and has no restrictions on usage (unlike Gamevoice Share).

If you really want voice recognition, as well as comms, buy Game Commander 2. It's infinitely superior to Gamevoice's utter pants voice recognition and only costs $30 or about £20 (only cost me £10, I upgraded from GC1).

In case you haven't gathered I think Sidewinder Gamevoice is a waste of money :)

a mate and i bought cheap headsets and tried rogerwilco. after careful set up we can only make out less than half of the other's speech. is that all that can be expected? are our headsets not good enough? is other software better?
thanx in advance

Waccy,

You've obviously tried adjusting the volume so there are a few things to try. Any headset should be OK.

Try using 'press to talk' sometimes its the only way to hear everything someone says.

Are you using low spec computers? If so you might experience stuttering. Go to the RW adjust tab and hit the 'configure' button - set CPU usage to Low.

If not. Are you getting break-up on the voice you're hearing? Could be down to packet loss, this will affect your voice comms more than latency. Some ISPs are notorious for Packet Loss - LineOne used to be bad, so was BT Internet (especially at peak times). So it could be you or your m8s connections. Try a free trial with an good ISP like ClaraNet to find out.

If you have adjusted the volume to max and it's still too quiet try clicking the +20dB mic boost in the advanced tab of the microphone balance.

I've not really used RW much but my m8 does regularly when playing Asheron's Call. He gets no problems with up to 4 others on a dial-up connection.

You could try Battlecom. IMO the voice quality is better than RW and there are different compression options that might be more suitable for your conn.

Hope that helps :)
