Is there any perforamnce difference between cable modems which connect through an ethernet card or cable modems which connects via my USB port (in theory , or in practice).

I forgot to say, unlike what NTl advertises on its webby, i havent got the motoroal SB3100i, but the newish 4100 (Im renting the modem and thats what i got sent), which can connect via USB port or ethernet card. I dont own an ethernet card, but if there would be any performance gain i would buy one, so what do you think?

USB should be find for it as it can run faster than the max cable modem speed anyway.

The max cable modem speed is 30Mb, the USB port can only cope with 12Mb. NTL have said that they don't support the USB interface, they only support the NIC, so i'm not sure if it will work with the USB interface. The reason for this is that you would have to use DUN like with an USB ADSL connection.

an ethernet adaptor is better IMHO, i think it uses less system resources than USB, not to mention it's easier to move the pc aroun if the modem is on the end of a cat5 UTP/STP cable (you can get them in 15 metre lenths for £9, a similar USB cable costs a lot more).

Not for some time to come will people be getting that.
As he said he is renting the modem I dont think it would matter.

You will never see 30mb on a cable modem. It's the theoretical max and NTL wont/dont have the bandwidth available.
