Just got a new ThunderBird 800 How hot should it get? So far its at 47*c, which seem high to me!

that's not to bad, they are rated to about 70 or 90c (although i would prefer a lower temp).

What sort of cooling have you got?
Is it just a CPU fan in which case do you know the make/model of the cooler?
and does the case have any fans to expel the hot air?

My duron 600@800 runs at 38c after a few hours of seti, and as low as 31c when i'm on the net (it's using 1.8v way over it's normal voltage so it heats up more).
I'm using a fop 38 fan (very noisy), and 4 active case fans.

no, thats a good temp. My duron gets as high as 61 or maybe 70. It never crashes.

Trust us, that's not a 'good' temp. While it may be true they're rated up to some ludicrous amount and silicon actually melts at 1410 Degrees C it's not healthy and will shorten it's life compared to a properly cooled CPU.

I would change your cooling mate, that is way to hot for comfort.
Even just changing your heatsink or adding a case fan would most likely make a big difference, a half decent heatsink and case fan won't make much noise but could well drop your temp to under 50c (one of the Taisol coolers, and a good case fan would cost about £15-20 and be fairly quiet).

ROFL, 60 - 70 pffffffffffff, meltdown expected!
Thats incredable, sort it ASAP imo.

I have a T-Bird 1.1 running @ 1288: - (1.85 volts)
Idle - 27
Full load - 44

I can also run it for a short period @ 1344
Idle - 30

It falls over before I can stress it, I need to do the 2.0 volt mod to make it stable.

I do have a cooler case though, 4 fans, Artic-Silver and a FOP32-1.

As for the original question, id say if thats under full load then its ok, but not good, id suggest getting a better cooler. If thats idle temp then change it ASAP.
Go here: http://www.theoverclockingstore.co.uk and get the following;
FOP32-1
Artic Silver(small contact area)
Copper Shim(if your scared of crushing CPU)

Set you back about £25, set up properly it will drop that temp to about 28 idle, never over 40 full load id say.

Enough babbeling,

:)

Mine reaches a max of 41c when playing games like UT and never goes above 41c. I have a 1ghz T/bird. I did have a higher tempreature until I brought a decent fan from http://www.overclockers.co.uk
