Panda Issues HTML VBS/Forgotten.A@mm Worm Warning
Panda Software has warned about a virulent worm that, unlike many of the latest crop of viruses, is propagated via e-mail when users simply open an infected message.
Panda says that the worm - VBS/Forgotten.a@mm - works in a similar fashion to Bubbleboy and Kakworm, but uses "social engineering" techniques to encourage users to open the carrier message, with headers such as "financing."
Also known as VBS/Pica.worm.gen, the new worm is notable because no attached file needs to be opened in order for it to be activated.
As its code is in Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) format, the firm says it is activated just by opening the e-mail in which it is contained.
VBS/Forgotten.A@mm is transmitted through Microsoft Outlook, to all contacts in the infected computer's address book in an e-mail message.
