USB or Serial?

i'm thinking of getting me a new modem to replace my good old haynes 33.6 modem, i'm hoping 2 buy the Diamond 56k external one but it comes as usb or serial do you know if the usb is faster than the serial or if theres no difference between the 2 at all?

I phoned diamond before buying and found out their USB version is all hardware as is the serial one, so that is what I bought, USB. Right away I went from seeing 33000bps on my 56k internal modem to 45500bps. Also I downloaded and modem optimazer called befaster and that as helped also.
