My PC
Athlon 550
MS-6167 ATX IR1 Irongate motherboard (i'm sure something there is important)
256Mb ram
Creative GeForce2 GTS
Windows 98

I bought a GeForce2 yesterday, installed and ran the 3d demos you get with the card. I was utterly unimpressed. The graphics looked fine, but the frame rate was very very poor. I was getting sub 5Fps on the tree and crystal ball demo.
I've seen the geforce1 doing the same demo, and it was miles faster than what i got.
I ran 3dmark because i thought it could just be a bug in the tree demo (some demos worked fine). I wanted to see how much more score i would get with a GF2 over my old TNT2.
With my TNT2 (same specs otherwise) i got 2000, with the GF2 i got under 1400.
With the above specs, i should be getting around the 6000 mark.

I went looking around the net, downloading the new Det.3 dirvers plus any creative stuff i could find.
I also saw something about a VIA chipset patch which solves the problem i'm having.
So i download the patch, and it's not compatible with my motherboard.

So, with the creative GF2 driver disk in the cd drive i install the new det3 drivers.
I get asked to insert the Creative driver disk...
Since then, my PC wont detect that i've got a cd drive at all.
It wont show up on divice manager.
I've cheaked all the cables, all fine.

I'm assuming it's not a hardware problem, as this only happened when fiddling with drivers (for a 3d card...).

The cd drive is:
Creative PC-DVD 6X
DVD6630E

I've looked everywhere for a driver disk for the DVD drive, but i can only find the creative encore drivers, which wont work.
Now, i can still open and close the drive. The light still comes on (for a short time), so i'm assuming it's not a power problem.

Not noticing that untill it was to late, i uninstalled the ge-force drivers planning to reinstall all the 3d stuff.
However, i can't because i have no cd drive. Now i'm left with a standard VGA gfx card (ugh).

I've copied off everything from the HDD which is important so i don't mind doing a reformat.
But i'm worried that when i take everything off, i wont be able to reinstall win98 again because my CD drive wont work.

I think a format will solve the geforce problem. As there may be a problem with my old tnt2 drivers. Also the AGP slot was set to 32Mb, which i belive is to low (yes?). It's now 128 (though i've heard i can put it upto 256).

Oh, incase you havn't guessed, i got no DVD driver disk with my PC-DVD (which came with the PC).

Thanks for reading and i hope you can help.

right
u were close with the via motherboard agp drivers
u'll be wanting amd's own version which is available at
http://www.amd.com
think its in the support or download section :)
that should fix all your framerate and 3dmark problems

the only thinkg i can think of about ur dvd is perhaps u knocked the ide cable out slightly when putting the gfx card in and then it finally fell off after u put the case on
