A friend has recently decided to buy a new PC, but has realised that rip off merchants like Time will try and sell him some old trash for his limited budget (Under £600 if possible).

So, if he decided to make his own, what componants would you reccomend, and how much would it cost? He would not need stuff like monitor speakers, modem etc.

Cheers

Alan

AMD Thunderbird 800 ~£105
Abit KT7 motherboard ~£110
Heatsink/fan £15-20
30gb hard drive ~£100
128mb ram ~£60
case with 300watt psu ~£50
which leaves about £150 for a graphics card (Geforce 2mx or Geforce DDR).

Prices are from Insight, Dabs, Crucial and OCUK.

You may find better prices, this is a rough guide only.

oops i forgot those (well thought he would re-use the floppy and cd-drives and possbily the sound card).

You can get an SB-Live value OEM for about £30
a good cd-rom drive for about £25

which would mean a geforce2 mx graphics card.

When i upgrade i use what i can of the old system (usually the cd-rom and floppy etc) untill i can upgrade them.
