I`ve decided to finally retire my k6-2 and i`m gonna get a duron due to financial constraints...
So which one to I get?

I`m gonna o/c it to buggery and would like a soft fsb and multiplyer function, also it should be nice and fast and pretty stable.

Any suggestions?

Like Werewolf said, the Abit KT7 is a damn fine board. Others to consider would be the Asus A7V and a new one from MSI K7 Pro2 (summat like that). A mate of mine has just built one with the MSI board and he reckon's it's the dogs nads :P

Yeah, ABit KT7 again, if u want to o/c in a Softmenu then the KT7 is the only board that can do this properly.

The MSI one is the KT7 PRO 2A. It's probably the cheapest of the ones I would recommend( the Asus A7V or or the Abit one already mentioned).

Having said this, 133 FSB capable and DDR boards are about to be released and these would give you more potential for future use, as unless AMD reuse some of the lower multipliers, like they did with the 400 and over k6 chips, 1200 would be the limit with the boards available now.

And lets face it, in a years time, a 1500 Palamino is going to be a cheap upgrade chip if you buy wisely now.

I have the ABit KT7 and it's lurrvly, if you overclock to much you can simply hold the insert key when you start out and it will set the chip speed to it's default, I find that very usefull :E , I have my 650 @ 850 and it's fine, and has been running great for about 4-5 months :)

Whats up with the Soltek SL-75KV2-X motherboard?? It got a good review at http://www.hexus.net and in the latest PCPro Mag, and its only £90 FFS :) It has all the overclocking tools as well!

:)

Personally i'd wait for the KT7A or the A7V133, both are based on the KT-133A chipset which although still uses SDR Ram it can use FSB's above 100. i think it is http://www.vr-zone.com has a review of this card where they got a duron 600 to 1050 with a 155MHz FSB.

personally, i wouldn't go for the kt7 after the problems I and others have had with it

you'll have no problems whatsoever so long as you :

don't have an nvidia based graphics card
don't have an sblive card
or an A3d based soundcard
and don't have a maxtor hard disk

:E

there are/have been known compatibility issues with these.

The only thing going for the board is the fact that you can overclock your processor sooooo easily with it.

strange
I have and abit kt7
geforce2 mx graphics
sb-live value
Maxtor 30gb DiamondMax VL40 UDMA100 hard disk :)

my pc shouldn't boot ;)

Seriously though the KT7 i hear a lot of bad things about, but i suspect a large part of the reason for that is that it is so popular.

Some of the problems with it are due to the chipset (the A3D problem)

Well, I've got A duron 700 in my Abit Kt7 board and it works like a dream. EVerything is fine although I do have a Geforce 2 MX (Nvidia) and my Hard drive is IBM. However I have a Sonic Vortex 2 soundcard which uses the Aureal chip (A3D) which works fine even though many people say it doesn't!

I've just bought the MSI K7T Pro2A

DO NOT buy it if you are running win 2K a few people on overclockers.com have had nightmares with it.

I am running win ME and it is sweet (and quick!)

rephrase... Sweet as in Great and Stable and brilliant
not sweet as in the board censorship ;)

I would also like to add that the MSI board is a lot more user freindly. The Diagnostic LED are a godsend.

Took me just under an hour to move all my computer contents from old case to the new case. Didn't even have to enter the BIOS. Haven't tried overclocking it yet but being able to OC in the BIOS is a definite improvement on the KT7 and A7V.

you can overclock in the bios on the KT7 as well:)

Abit KT7/KT7-RAID, KA7 or Asus A7V as everyone else has suggested :)

I've just ordered a KT7-RAID :)
