View Full Version : duron help
i got a new amd duron 800, new mboard, hdd, case to replace my old system.
my old system locked for no reason , so i got new parts, however it still locks.
prob is it only really locks on simple tasks, like spider solitaire, it runs rogue spear fine!
whats up with it.
how fast should fans run btw?
and how hot should chips be, and what voltages should it be on.
mine runs at 49 degrees, but pc alert gives warnings for a fan speed of 652 and some over the top volts on the higher scales
cheers

What motherboard are you using ?
Do you have any case fans ?
What heat sink and fan is on the CPU ?
Which OS are you using ?
Have you overclocked the CPU ?
The above are important questions we'll need the answers to in order for us to help.
49 degrees sounds too hot on a non-clocked Duron and the heat inside the PC maybe part of the problem. Your motherboard should've come with some sort of monitoring program, if not, try this one (http://members.brabant.chello.nl/~a.vankaam/mbm/download/MBM418.zip) as it may help. You could also try SiSoft SANDRA (ftp://ftp.demon.net/pub/simtelnet/win95/util/san649.zip) to interrogate your system.
Like I said, it might be heat but it could also be a number of things. Strange that a game like Rogue Spear runs OK though.
Please supply as much info as possible and even if I cannot help, there are others here that probably will be able to. :)

:O my fan runs at over 4000rpm all the time
yours sounds as if its faulty....
heya, my cpu is not overclocked,im using win me,i have the fan on the cpu and the the fan in the psu, I got a fan and heat sink with the mboard,it came in a green box and its square :) its an MSI 51 sumthinpossibly (6130), i forgotten it off hand.
i've tried it without the the case on but to no avail.
however more info on the subject.
before i changed the mboard and cpu and hdd it did the same thing, locked for no reason, before that it reset whenever the cdrom accessed, so we changed the graphics card and the fan/heatsink and then it started locking.
anyway cheers for the info.
oh and wait a minute, if your fan runs at 4000 rpm what would the outer edge speed be, wouldnt it be astronomically high?
i do remember some a-level physics

I'll add my 2p worth
the problem with lockups, are you using a new IDE cable or the same one out of your old machine, the lockups could be caused by a faulty cable
and on the subject of cpu temps, my duron 750 runs at a warm 46`c, fan speed as aroun 4500rpm.
in my exp anything below 55`c is safe
ok, i changed all the cables, checked the floppy, im gonna check the graphics card and its drivers tommorrow, then i'll need to know where i can get a good fan from, which isnt that expensive
cheers!
