View Full Version : First deck questions can you help?
I have a Lib Tech deck (heh can you tell I snowboard too
), the new style Fury trucks with the red elastomer stuff (first deck, looked good in the shop so not sure if they are actually any good  ) and spitfire big guns 58 95d wheels.
With the trucks when I pull the wheels against the board the movement feels kinda gritchy and not smooth. Is this normal? I think the furys are a new style of truck so would I be better with an older style like independant?
Also how do you tighten your trucks so the board is stabler at speed ie more force needed to turn so doesn't wobble as much?

to tighten your trucks you need to tighten nut around the kingpin of your truck, the kingpin is the large bolt that runs though your truck holding it together.
or
Buy harder rubbers/bushings these are the things that go around the kingpin and are made outa ... rubber stuff,
My mate brought some fury trucks and the rubbers suck so you might have to buy some new ones.
You just gotta pluck up the courage to go into a shop and ask "Do you have any HARD rubbers plz"
hehe
your other problem sounds like your gettin wheel bite thats when your wheels come in contact with the deck.
Its bcoz you got quite large wheels.
I suggest your buy some extra riser pads which go under your truck and make contact with the deck,
these will rise your trucks higher.
Hope it helps

Lucas gave a very good explantion there. well done..
The risers dont have to be that big, It would help if you meausered the distance you would like the gap, between the wheels and the deck.
For the turning thing, again lucas is right, but you dont want too hard bushings or it will be impossible to turn. Get some average ones but tighten your trucks more.
The fact may be that your bushings are fine, its just that your trucks are very loose.
Thanks for the help wetwilly1717 and Lucas2001. I checked the underside of the deck and there are no scorch marks or anything on the surface above the wheels so I think it must just be the crappy fury trucks. I think I'll need to get some new one. Can you recommend a good normal pair?
Think my wheels are too big for tricks too at 58 or should I get some smaller ones?

OOooh if yoiu are looking for some quality trucks get indipendant. Cheap and reliable.
Oh and yes, it might be that your wheels are too big. I have 53's and consider mine okay for me (even though my friends say the are tiny)
I'm getting a new deck because I just broke my old one, what should I get?
I have been skateboarding for just over a week, I have a budget of about £50-£60 and I want a board that will last me for a while if possible :)
I got mine from Boardwise so if you have one near where you live then check them out. Otherwise, maybe the other peeps here could recommend a good shop/online webby for ya. In my Boardwise most of the boards were around the 50 quid mark alone but you can maybe get a complete board deal from elsewhere. Oh, just had a thought, buy Sidewalk Surfer magazine and check the ads in there. Loads of em...
Can you recommend any specific boards, trucks and wheels?

Good...
BOARDS: shortys, World industries or Flip
Trucks: Indipendant or destructo
Wheels : spitfire or ghetto child
In my op, these are the best :)
I think I'm going to get this (http://www.eastcoastskateboards.com/decks.htm) Skateboard , Independant trucks and Spitfire wheels :D
I'm getting the 8 inch reaper board :E
I saw really good reviews of the board on a couple of sites :)
WW, I just found out that Playstation Park is about about a mile and a half away my house, near where I do rock climbing and fairly near where I do canoeing :D

It looks like a good deck and sounds it too. i think it'll turn out fine.
1 mile away? lucky damned you. I live in Oxford so...
Anyway im gonna lay off that place for a bit, its getting really chilly...
I went to PS park today to watch (not confident enough yet for skating around other skaters, I have such crap bearings I can't quite go at walking speed even off of a ramp and I don't have pads) and it looked pretty good :D
Damn busy though, every inch of ground was covered in people :(
I hope it isn't so busy when school starts again, I have fridays off college and I could go down there for the whole day! :D
and I was wrong, its closer to 4 miles away ;)
I'm really looking forwards to getting my new deck and stuff, I wanna use it now! ;(
A few other things though, what is the average wheel size, what are good bearings and how much should I be paying for the wheels and bearings? :E
TankQ :D

Hey,
Its cool that you went to PS, even though you couldnt really skate there, its good to check out what your going to have to work up to.
Its always quite busy on the holidays, but on the weekends its usualy alright (friday...) I went on a shoolday once and it was practily empty! (i dunno, that could have been luck...)

the average wheels size for you (mostly street, maybe a bit of ramp) is about 54-55. you can get some top makes for about 20-25 pounds but some pretty decent ones for about 15 (all below that are a bit iffy)
Bearings should cost about 10 quid. but my mate bought some really good ones for only 7. You should be looking at abec 5.
Hope all of this helps.
Yeah, very helpful, thanks ;)
I know pretty much what I want I just needed to make sure I wasn't going to get ripped off or buy crap parts :E

Well you werent ripped off, thats for sure.
If you go to PSSP again, look for the mini box, (its kinda two in one, big box attached to another small one.) Thats great for learning on! :)
I got some Reds bearings today and my friend is giving me his old wheels tomorrow :D
I won't be getting my new board until the beginning of February because it costs almost twice as much to buy it from England as it does to get it in America so I am having it sent to my Grandma and she is going to bring it with her when she visits me, just 3 weeks wait :E
I will probably get my new wheels and trucks friday week :O

ooh granny in america :E I wish i had one of them!
What abec are the "reds bearings?"
I got the name wrong, Bones Reds Bearings?
Even if you haven't heard of them they still seem quite good, I can go fast now :D
Unfortunately they are really hard to take back out of wheels ;(
Its nice having relatives in America, most of my family lives there so I have gotten to go there 14 times in 16 years :D

Bones bearings? I had them, they rule!
To get a bearing out of a whee, get a truck (attached to the board) and choose an end (just a normal pointy bit) with a wheel off it.
Get the wheel with the bearing you wish to remove.
Put the side of the truck axel through the wheel touching the bearing on the indide, and lever the bearing out.
Im sorry if this explanation isnt very clear, but if you really need to know, ask me again. :)
I think I understand :)
Of course Bones bearings rule, I own them ;)
