View Full Version : New Case advise needed.
Hi, Im building a system around the 1.2ghz T/bird, and was wondering which case to get.
I've read the thread where everyone recommedns the 802, just wondered if that would be cool enough, the system will also include a GF2 gfx card.
The other option I was considering was one of the Tornado cases from Ocers UK.
Would the 802 be cool enough?, will I need to get 2 extra fans to put in it?, should I just go for the Tornado?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
One more question.
will a 300 watt PSU be enough??
The cheapest and most efficient way to allow air to circulate freely to cool the chips is to leave the side off your case.
Personally I couldn't cope with the sound made by 4+ fans, its bad enough with the psu, the two on the chip cooler without any more to join in.
Yep the 802 will be fine as long as you get 2 case fans for it. These can be positioned at the front bottom and at the reae next to the CPU. All you do it setup the bottom one to pull air in, and the rear on to push air out the case and your sorted, tho make sure you have a good heatsink for the actual CPU. There are already mounts points in place for these case fans.
It really is a kick ass case, I cannot speak any higher of it.

i agree also, last night i had to download the CS 1.0 patch on my modem :( . The comp is in my room and has 2 case fans in and i managed to sleep through them :) Quite noisey but never goes above 40degrees.

The 'Tornado' cases are modified 802's with holes and fans cut into the sides. I have an 802 and I love it. It's the best/nicest case I've used in the past 6 years of PC building.
I have fans on the front and back of mine in the configuration that YBW explained. I have a KT7 RAID, 1 HDD, Duron O/Ced to 800, GeForce 2 etc. Normally, the CPU temp never goes above 36 degrees and the case temp stays below 25 degrees. However, when I went to I6 in November, the temps rocketed. CPU temp hovered round 48-50 degrees and the case went to 38-42. Admitedly, there were around 150 other PC's, monitors and people in the room making it hot, but I would've thought my system would've been better as I have a total of nine fans in the beast!
These are:
2 on the HDD.
1 on the motherboard.
1 on the CPU (Globalwin FOP32).
1 on the PSU.
1 on the GeForce2.
1 at the front bottom of case drawing air in.
1 at the back of the case pulling air out.
1 in a PCI slot under the GF2 sucking warm air out.
I was shocked that my baby was heating up that much! My mate sitting next to me had an even faster system (1ghz Classic Athlon and 64mb GF2) in a Tornado case with 2 extra fans on the side and another 2 on the top of the case. His temps were lower than mine when I'm at home!
So, if you are thinking about overclocking or LAN parties I'd go for the Tornado case - thats if you can stand the noise!. Having said this, you don't have to have all the fans running as they can easily be disconnected. This is why I'm going to get a Tornado case before I8 in March as I don't want the heat panic again!
hehe. I had a same problem at a 2 day LAN I attended with my 802. I just removed the side of the case, then sat is at the side(where it should go), and this left a small space at the top which kept my temps sweet all through the LAN.
/me awaits his two good 80mms fans and dobule 120mm slot fan' arriving

They call me supercool Kazza :)
I did have a little cooling probs, but dropping the chip back to 900 Mhz did the trick.
Go for the tornado...you'll suffer a small loss of herring (sic) but with some luck OcUK will get some Sanyo Denki Fans in and it will be just as cool and a lot quieter! :)
I don't have a temp probe on the new sys - but who cares

p.s. System now running...
T-Bird 1.224 GHz
MSI K7T Pro2 Mobo
60 and 30 Gb HDDs
Geforce 2 64Mb GTS card (3dmark of about 9k)
SB live
bells
whistles
etc. etc.
Apparently this cooling system (http://www16.big.or.jp/~bunnywk/cpuindex.html) works quite well, but you'd have to be brave enough to even think about attempting to build it :E
Thanks for the responses.
considering the pc will be on for most hours of the day, I think I'll go for one of the tonado cases.
better to be safe than sorry. :)

I've got the Supermicro SC-760 A case. If you want to consider a large full tower then look at this one. It is really huge and already comes with mounting brackets for 8 case fans + 2 for PSU. You can get it fairly cheap from http://www.scan.co.uk . It includes a 300 W PSU. I've been very impressed by this case since I bought it.
