I've recently upgraded my onboard intel 810 to a creative Riva TNT 2 M64 PCI. Which is quite a large jump and as expected, is messing me about.
Basically whenever the card is plugged in the monitor tells me either "no signal" or "power saving off mode"
This happens even if the card is placed in the slot but not connected to the monitor.
Would anyone care to help as those razor blades look tempting

Have you disabled the onboard video first ? If not, this could be a problem. Your motherboard manual should describe a way to disable onboard stuff either via the:

BIOS
A jumper on the board
Windows

As I don't know you BIOS or board I'll explain the WIndows method.

Remove the new card and boot as normal
Right click on 'My Computer'
Click on 'Properties'
Click on the 'Device Manager' tab
Look for the 'Display Adapters' option and double-click it
Now highlight the video card (should be the on board one) and click 'Properties'
In the 'Device Usage' section at the bottom, make sure that:

Exists in all hardware profiles is NOT TICKED

and that

Disabled in all hardware profiles IS TICKED.

Click OK - OK and the PC should ask to be shutdown.

When the machine has shutdown, turn off the juice and install the new video card. If it doesn't work after this though and you still get a black screen, it's possible that you have a duff card :{

You are plugging the monitor into your NEW card?

Or have you left it plugged into the onboard graphics card?

No, when the monitor is plugged into the new card, I get "no signal" etc even if the monitors plugged into the on-board card with the new card in but not connected, I get power savin off mode
