The thread about 'deep impact' got me thinking.
say, in real life, the powers that be announced that a massive comet had been detected, heading for earth. 20 miles wide, easily big enough to destroy almost all life on earth. They announce it will be here in 3 months, and its to big to do anything about it.

How would you spend those last 3 months.?..

Would we see the 'good' side of humans..or would it just degenerate into an orgy of 'badness'.

I'd take EVR, pay up the mortgage for the next 3 months (so I didn't get any nasty letters) and take myself off to some distant warm land and live with a bunch of primitive native hunter gatherers who couldn't give a toss about material things. Here there would be no anarchy (as in the rest of the world) as they only value the environment, each other and their own health (in that order). If the comet struck, I'd go out in a community that valued US and WE more than I or ME so I would not have to fear anything other than death (a certainty since the day I was born anyway) itself. If the comet missed I'd still have my EVR dosh to return to "civilisation" if I was so inclined. I would return a better person and if I chose to stay I could teach my new community about the outside world, what its dangers are and the value of simplicity.

In short if you don't get way out of the cities or if strictest martial law (shoot on sight) is not imposed social breakdown will destroy you long before the comet. Modern society is too far removed from nature to philosophically accept its fate and the widespread absence of any firm religious belief has left it unable it to weather any serious storm.

You can absolutely guarantee T Rex & Co. carried on exactly as they had done so throughout the Cretacious (not Jurassic Mr. Spielberg) right up to the last second. To the utter shame of humanity I fear the "Civilised" world would disgrace our species while the "Primitives" showed how to go out in style.

I would also recommend storing the genetic information of every known living species (except one) and sending it into space so that if life exists elsewhere it may be reconstructed and wondered at.:)
You would have to exclude humans, their genetic makeup shows them to be the most diverse, highly evolved creature. This would prompt the alien intelligence to reconstruct humans first. Just one look would be enough for them to consign the whole lot (unopened) into the cosmic waste basket.:(

Simple. Construct a bunker under the hardstanding in my back yard. Construct a few feet underground, consisting of various rooms connected by concrete tunnel. I'm not talking big, just big enough As many 'creature comforts as possible. Room enough for 6 to 8. A generator with a large amount of fuel in a secure site on the surface. Large amount of medical supplies. 2 years worth of food. Construct an air filtering system.

Or I could go down the road from where I live armed with an SA80 and 'persuade' the owner of an ex-military nuclear bunker to let me hide out there for the duration. I'd bring my own supplies and everything.

......and you think I'm joking.......
