Inquiring minds need to know.
I have been drifting in and out of collecting for some time now and wondered if there is anything really worth a place in my boxes?

/Errrr..........HELLO???
No wonder nothing happens in the Comic section. There's no bugger here! :E
Lone Wolf and Cub issue 3 is TOTALLY GODDAMN AMASING..... now for issue 4. YEAH BABY!!
/"Is there anybody out there" :monkee:
Cuddles my original Lone Wolf & Cub comics from First :E
The question can only be partly answered if you give us a clue on what type of stuff tickles your fancy.
What sort of things have you collected in the past?
Monkey Fool

Hey Hey, Life
I used to collect:-
Spawn:- Went a bit pants
Preacher:- Ended BOOOO!!
Darkness:- Died when Ennis left
Stormwatch:- Died
Witchblade:- Was never that good anyway (in my opinion)
DV8: Lost the plot completely and became nice???
Crimson: Again lost its way
Battlechasers:- Never really happened
Batman: Lost interest when Kelly Jones left
Stuff like that really.
I did collect X-men and the likes when I was a kid but wouldn't go back there now unless some incredible writers/ artist's were on board.
You have all the origonal LW&C's that COOOOOL Man, totally. :) :) :)
see if you can get the batman vs. predator issues. i just read through the collected edition and it's actually very very good.
gibbons and the kubert brothers did a damn fine job. love that two page spread of batman and the predator on the roof of police HQ staring the life out of each other. and both look downright scary. and the drawings at the end of the edition were simply amazing.

I have the comics of that Khaz and really enjoyed the little blighters. :E
Anything else???
:monkee:
les see...if ur into manga enough then the eva and star wars mangas are excellent. when darth vader get's pissed of at leia for not revealing the location of the rebels the way he's drawn when getting angry is sooo funny.
and the evangelion mangas are quite a heavy load as it's very very deep. i foget the name of the author but i do know that he wrote evangelion in three years and those three years of his life were the most depressing years of hie life...jeeeez...
as are the dragonball ones. toriyama does a fine job of drawing and writing. makes me laugh every time..there's always something in each issue that i chuckle at.
u ever heard of archie comics monkee?
Monkey Fool
11-01-2001, 12:43
Evangelion sounds like it could be interesting I will see if my dealer can get it. :)
I was a bit skint when the Star Wars Manga came out and will definately look at getting the back issues. they have been a priority for a while and will probably kill all the other SW cmomics out there.
I have never thought about getting Dragon Ball as I thought it was aimed at Kids. If not I will look into them. :E
I have never read archie either and have heard about it many times.....I.E. Chasing Amy gives it a mention doesn't it. I did not know it was still out there?!?!?
Cheers Khaz :)
and oh believe you me...the dragonball mangas are not aimed at kids. quite perverted and full of sexual innuendo. and the action is even better. :D
and yeah..archie comics have been around since dec. 1941 when the first issue was printed in pep comics. :)
but anyway...yeah, evangelion is really really good. if you can't get the actual issues then go for the book editions. :)

Cool!! Cheers M8 I will definately look into Evagelion and Dragon Balls.
Quite high on the art DROOL factor are they???

this week i have been mostly reading
sandman - excellent comic with cool storys and a real subtle sense of humour
hellblaizer - simply amazing mate, cheeky cockney pisshead battles demons, fantastic.
also ranma 1/2, the crow, oh my godess, sleaze castle stuff like that....:)
i've read a little ranma mangs and its hilarious. although i've seen ranma mostly in it's anime form. :D
Monkey Fool
11-01-2001, 16:24
Heh Heh!!
Souless is back :E
I've read Ranma bits as Khaz said and again mostly seen it in Anime form. Wierd :)
I used to collect Hellblazer "in the olden days" and loved it a great deal. (Same can be said for the classic Sandman......Gaiman rules)

I have been reading recently
X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, Cable, Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men, Daredevil Ninja, Preacher, Danger Girl.
I'd recommend Daredevil Ninja, Ultimate Spidey and Danger Girl from that bunch
anyone here read spider-girl here yet??
i keep reading ign's reviews and they keep on praising it.
i was in the US but missed a chance to buy an issue or two. i'm gonna buy some now anyway but wanted to see if i could get someone's opinions..:)
Monkey Fool
12-01-2001, 10:02
Hey Jock :) did you ever get your Danger Girl back issues??
I believe...could be wrong.....that Rob Liefeld works on one of the X books now and hence would have to steer well clear of them. That guy's a waste of good air.
Khaz, I've only heard good things about that book as well but I'm not too sure its my cup of tea. :)
springheeledjock
12-01-2001, 10:46
Ooops missed that one off. Spider -Girl is also a current fave of mine, very well written, much more like a classic comic than any of the new multi universe weird twist and turns Marvel offerings. Check it out.
Monkey, never got round to sorting out the Danger Girl back issues, been a bit skint over Xmas, but I'll drop you a line when I've moved to my new flat and have a bit more cash.
The 2 main X books are being done by Scott Lobdell for the next few months I think, then Grant Morrison is taking over. Could be good.
Don't quote me on that though, my memory is crap. :)
Monkey Fool
12-01-2001, 10:55
Yeah drop me a line if you sort yourself out, but no worries. :)
I'm not a massive Lobdell fan either but might look into some X-books again if Morrison works on them.

I might have meant Warren Ellis actually. Curse my crap memory. I'll try and find out for you lot.
Monkey Fool
12-01-2001, 12:28
Now if it is Warren Ellis then I'll definately get 'em in.
(He only lives about ten miles from my humble abode which is a bit mad :E)
unless i'm mistaken..warren ellis is right now working on x-man. and apparently he's turning it into one marvel's finest titles. :D
i've been wanting to start collecting x-man for some time now but never really got around to doing it as i'm just darn lazy..:E :E

12-01-2001, 15:08
Apparently X-Man is being canned, along with 5 other X books. So I heard anyway.
Also, just so you all know, I am also known as Cable Dayspring, so I am still about and haven't just disappeared off the face of the earth. Just can't be bothered to keep changing login names is all. :)

:) Ok!! :monkee:
Khaz how come your not in the film forum as much any more M8???? Its a bit boring with all the seriousness that's crept in there.
:monkee:
oh i'm there all right...just looking for prime opportunities to pounce!! :E :E :E
and besides..i felt like branching out to other forums as i suddenly rememberd that i happen to read comics, listen to music, like anime (a lot!!!) and so on..:D :D :D

I haven't looked on the Anime forum for ages as the same kind of posts from months ago get re-raised.
I'll have to go check it out. :)

Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! What the **** is this!! I trundle off for a few days and a major bloody thread gets started in the comics forum and I'm not here! *******! :(
One book which is superb at the moment that no one has mentioned is 'Powers' by Brian Michael Bendis. It's like 'Homicide:Life on the Street' only set in a world with superheroes. This months edition starring Warren Ellis (on a ride along) is superb. The dialogue is cracking, the art perfect and the only thing I can complain about is a couple of spelling errors that got through.
By the way, maybe Monkey Fool can help me out here, having got well into the Authority after reading the first two TPBK collections I decided to backtrack and pick up the Warren Ellis Stormwatch Trades hoping to fill in a little background on the genesis of The Authority. Although the stories introduce most of the main characters and sets forth some interesting changes the final book just sort of runs out. I think the last issue of Stormwatch collected is vol. 2, issue 9. So, my question is, how long did this series of Stormwatch run and how did the survivors evolve into the Authority?
Weasel you been reading Strange Kiss or Dark Blue by Warren as well?. A strange mix Avatar Press, but Threshold has its moment and theres nowt like a bit of Faust :E
Lets see:
STAR12541F ____ WARREN ELLIS STRANGE KISS TP RT £6.99
STAR12482D2 ____ POWERS VOL 1 WHO KILLED RETRO GIRL TP RT £16.50
;)

I haven't read very much of Ellis' stuff outside of those mentioned above. I've picked up a bunch of Transmetropolitan trades but haven't got round to reading them yet. I might give Strange Kiss a whirl in the near future though.
P.S:- Anyone reading Kane or Jack Staff by Paul Grist? Great books, it just kills me the wait between issues. Still, at least he's one of the few UK indy publishers still going.

Hey a Stormwatch question......this takes me back. :E
It was a big shock to Stormwatch fans when the book was cancelled with no real prior warning. I loved the Image superhero books that tended to get nasty (a bit beyond the X-books) and then they go and can it with everything else. I've gotta be honest when I say that bringing Warren Ellis into "revieve" the line was the worst thing that could happen. :bigcry:
I believe he felt too many restraints with the current characters and history so it was time for them all to die.....except the characters he created, such as Jenny Sparks. This meant the death/removal of all the best characters such as Fuji/Winter/Battalion which SUCKED! Bye-bye proper Superheroes....into thinking mans hero's like so many other books are doing. Not that this is a bad trend in the business I just thought Stormwatch would make it through.
I can't really remember how it all came to end because I was a bit pissed at the time. I read it, then shelved it, without taking too much care for the ending.
I did get a letter printed in #37 or was #47......one of them two anyway. :E (not that this has any relevance but hell its worth telling someone ;) )
Volume 1 ran for a good fifty books and was tied up quite nice for the "New Era" of Ellis writing but he got fed up it real quick.....unless the plan was too take the book apart eventually. I can't recall how many issue's of Vol II went to print now but it was not far into double figures, I'm pretty sure of that.
Hope this is something towards what you wanted. :)
P.S. Transmetrolpoitan is a cracking book, Ellis at hisbest but it can be a bit heavy at times... :)
[Edited by Monkey Fool on 15-01-2001 at 09:35 AM]
whooooah, no post turn up at all then a whole load come
at once, (whats that about buses)
Anyway, I aint been to the comic shop for while now but
the last thing I read was Bad Blood : A hellblazer special.
Hellblazer In general is the best but I have had NO money to
spend after a ridiculously expencive new year night out.
I would be reading the new RED STAR comixs as the first was cracking....cold war sov block fantasy/sci fi anyone.
http://www.theredstar.com
Otherwise I'm waiting for the last graphic novel of the Preacher series.
(DONT tell me the ending, not even a little bit and dont
pretend to tell me then say you were kidding and leave
me confused and pissed off)
Does anyone rate transmetropoliten ???
Monkey Fool
15-01-2001, 13:59
Transmetropolitan is a great book but can be a little intense at times. I'm probably just on a different level or whatever but found myself re-reading sections to understand WTF was going on. :)
When I started collecting again a few months ago there were some brilliant books around.
1)Darkminds and Warlands from Dreamwave.
2)Empire, Shock Rockets and others from Guerilla Studios were the likes of Waid, Perez and Busiek are working now. (and own this newly constructed company)
WHATS HAPPENED TO THESE BOOKS????????????
Will the comic industry ever settle down and produce books on time for longer than 3 issues......not including the likes of Hellblazer, the classic Preacher, Batman, X-books etc.
Rant over :E
I remember the likes of Eddie Campbell and Paul Grist from their small press days.
I think the diversity of the indie comic goes unrecognised sometimes as there are some nice gems, agmonst the garbage.
Stormwatch, If I remember rightly the 2nd series went to # 11. And Wildcats/Aliens is also related into it as well, but besides been written by Warren I cant remember why? Maybe a related cameo or something cant remember :E
stormwatch # 10 cover (http://www.eranu.f9.co.uk/foxy/comics/images/stormwatch10.jpg)
The 4 Stormwatch tradepaperbacks print from #37 of 1st series to #9 of the 2nd.

/me sobs at picture of Battalion taking head gear off.
1) He should never have taken the job in the first place.
2) Stormwatch should never have disappeared. Buggers.
They should never have done the god-awful Wildcats/Aliens/Stormatch crossover.
Me looks at the the trend in alternate covers again and the trend of producing expensive one off specials at the same time as the regular titles and sighs. :(
The trouble about all the imprints under Image, is that at one piont they flooded the market with new titles and often or not the good stuff got obscured.
God I remember when Perez [ one of my all time fave artists ], was drawing a handfull of titles a month. These later day artists seem to be lucky to draw 1 page a month :E
Be nice if they actually put some books on a bi-monthly or some alternating status. At least that way you would get a steady monthly selection.
Monkey Fool
15-01-2001, 15:07
Couldn't agree more about good books getting ignored.
The thing is with Bi-monthly titles is they seem to slip more than monthly. A few examples Battlechasers, Divine Right, Wildcats (YEAH THANKS TRAVIS YEH GIT), The one by Michael Turner he did after Witchblade, Hellshock etc. etc.
They seem to put books on Bi-monthly publication schedules in the event of it going belly up soon after.
Having mentioned Battlechasers I can't believe that title is still in single figures. Excluding variants, specails, 1/2's and so on. ;) :)
Monkz :monkee:
If I remember rightly Battlechasers # 8 was on last months order list :)
Rofl, some titles infact have more variants than they have of a series run :E
Hellshock? Not the jae "never say never" lee comic? :E
Seems certain creator owned titles go to the dogs for the simple matter they often can make or need to make a quick buck doing a fill in or run for another publisher.
Monkey Fool
15-01-2001, 15:55
The one and the same M8.
Don't know if you saw/read the Jae Lee Hellshock so-called ongoing series where #1 was a double issue but that cover could be my favourite of ALL time. Absolutely Gorgeous!!
Shame there was only ever three issues, still his work on Inhumans was good. :)
Got em somewhere :E
Remember JL from Namor :E

I vaguely remember the WildCATS/Aliens book featuring some superhero/alien hybrids (last few members of Stormwatch, I guess?)

Hehe! :) My earliest claim to fame is getting my Mean Machine Tharg drawing printed in 2000AD many years back (I think it's in Prog 5XX something, can't remember exactly where). I won a fiver for it, which was nice. Anyone curious as to my real identity could probably look it up.
Hey Monkey, I remember Mr Spawn himself Todd drawing a few "All Star Squadron" issues. :E
Namor was pretty good, I mean you had the likes of Iron Fist appear in it.
