View Full Version : Fifa league/ladder
There's been som einterest in getting a league or ladder going for Wireplay users, so if you are interested in getting involved, let me know here and post your ideas on format, rules etc.
Cheers,
Chas
I've been thinking on a few ideas today, so I thought I'd get the ball rolling (sorry;))....
The main question is league or ladder. There's a lot of obvious problems with running a league..
You need enough people to start one in the first place
Once the season's underway nobody else can join
You can guarantee that some people won't play their fixtures or drop out halfway through.
Creating fixtures and updating leagues takes a lot of time.
On the other hand we're talking about footy here and it just wouldn't be the same without league tables. I think I've got solutions for all these problems which would make leagues do-able...
If a player misses a fixture some kind of default result will be awarded. We'll need some king of system in place so that we know who which one is the slacker. Needs some more thought, ideas anyone?
Once we've started a league any new players registering will go in a reserve list. If someone fails to play say 3 matches, they will be replaced by the next person on the reserves list.
I've downloaded various league manager utils that can be used for generating the fixture lists, league tables etc.
This solves the probs that I can see arising, apart from the firs, enough players. But this hopefully will come in time.
So I think we should go with a ladder for now and look at starting a league once the word gets around. Of course there's nothing stopping us having a FIFA night for a knockout cup on a regular basis.
As for the ladder I've been searching for a perl script to run this without success, so if anyone knows of one let me know. Alternatively we can use Cases Ladder (the Wireplay ones are a bit crap and I don't really want to use them if I can help it).
Stuff to go on the website...
All the usual guff, league data once that's running, the ladder or link to Cases, news, reports, Hall of Fame/Shame, contact list with ICQ/email for arranging games, chatroom, link to this forum, downloads, rules.. I think that's about it.
Over to you...
I'm just wondering how the games will be played ie. over a direct ip connection or over some wireplay servers/macthup.
If i was to choose between ladder and league the most viable option would be a ladder or failing that resorting to a league format, much like premiership/div1 leagues but the first option is to gain some interest from the fifa players who'd like to participate.
Other thing is the case of lag, it may be very bad resulting in the other player having an advantage (whoever hosts the game) i like the way http://www.fifaclubs.com is running there leagues but thats worldwide :(
As chas says it's better to start of with a ladder, then when there is more interest start up a league.
But if this gets off the drawing boards and into practise i'd thik this would create a good community and get more people interested in buying/playing fifa..

i think that if we have small leagues, that way they only run for a month or something, people shioldnt have a problem
have different divisions etc, to make for more even competition as well :)
I would tend to go for a ladder format atm until the snowball effect kicks in and more people sign up to it.
I think the one we use in AA would be suffice really chas?:

Ive never really found any probs with yet. Im not sure where they got it but i think either Mut or Macwedd could help ya there :)
Would also be really nice if wp3 supported it somehow? surely wouldnt be a massive prob with not needing server support being a peer to peer game??? but maybe licence issuse would stop that?

Thanks for the input guys... err... where to start..
We would have to play it over IP, Wireplay unfortunately can't support it I believe due to licencing issues, or it could be down to lack of DirectPlay support, I'll find out.
I had a look at Fifa Clubs webby earlier and already nicked their rules to amend for our own use;).
Small leagues with several (I can live in hope..) divs - Yes I think that would be the way to go
rather than long drawn out affairswhere people with nothing to play for would start dropping out.
Dilly - The AA ladder is the Wireplay one:( We could try it, but I know a lot of clubs have had probs with it.
Cheers,
Chas
Yeah i would probably agree with you there chas, after thinking about it people will loose interest with a ladder but possibly maybe the only way to start if their is a low amount of peeps to start with ? anyway i'll leave it to your good judgement m8;) and i hope you dont mind if i pimp this forum on the AA forum. maybe someone could do the same in the cs one?
and grimmy...thats this months ladder m8 ..dark dave won it last month and the ruling is that the winner of each month gets put back to 27 place, kinda makes it interesting i suppose. :)
Thanks for the update and the work chas ...tis all appreciated m8:)
Just to clarify, I didn't mean the league was the way to go instead of a ladder. What I meant was, I think small leagues were the way to go instead of a couple of big ones, when people will lose interest if they've got nothing to play for.
We need to set up a ladder first to get some interest going, which can be reset regularly.
I've still not found a script I can run of a website so it looks like it's either Cases or the Wireplay one. I'll check out Cases in more detail and report back.
Cheers,
Chas
