and in answer to my question foxy ? :)
I know it is possible to have an embedded password box on a page, but the way I did it is with Java - I know, I know - not the best solution, but has anyone got a better solution than using Java? Watermelon... I will give you the URL for the embedded Java password thing if you want?

thanks
but i don't wanna do it in html it takes too long! Is there a way to do it in frontpage 2000?
That Java password is VERY easy to do... you download the ZIP file and (from what I can remember) all you need to do is upload 2 or 3 files and cut and paste a bit of code. It is very secure... there are some disadvantages, like not being able to have a username as well as password, but I think its good. Also, it uses Java, which limits the number of browsers that can use it... but, in my opinion, it is an easy to use password applet that actually contains a very good degree of security.

yeah, but what i was wanting was a way to embed the normal .htaccess and .htpaword (something like that) username and password window instead of it poping up
There are ways of doing it through PHP, but you have to pretty good. Let me find a tutorial and I'll post it here.
http://www.zend.com/zend/tut/authentication.php
Give it a go, by no means a simple tutorial though.

Its the only way I know of doing it, and I know a fair few web programming languages... Are you willing to do ANY programming?

i'm trying to learn php...or at least the basics
but i really just want something simpler, instead of having the popup box, have it in a page...
but if that isn't possible...
it looks like i'll have to give php a look :(
