Well, just finished the final part of Brian Azzarello's Good Intentions story arc and I have to say I'm impressed. Hellblazer's been in a transitory limbo since Paul Jenkins left. Warren Ellis never really got started before he left (ironically, his best Hellblazer issue was the one they wouldn't print). As for Brian's start, I didn't really care for his Constantine in prison story arc. Constantine seemed too in control the whole time. I really didn't feel the horror.
But then Brian moved on to Good Intentions with (at last) a new regular series artist (and a good one too). This story did evoke fear. The story built up with great pacing dropping hints at the nastiness lurking just behind the veil. Right from the start you knew this wasn't going to end well but, like Constantine himself, you weren't quite sure what the situation was.
The ending, revealing a rather mundane (if depraved) revelation was genuinely surprising and, given Constantine's actions, rather heart breaking. I'm not sure where the fallout from this is going to take us but one thing's for sure -- Constantine is in a very bad place right now.
