quite a signifcant amount of time, dunno about anyone else - but, i reccomend you look at other levels ( for any game ), take shots, look at the features of your fave maps ( ie architecture, style ).
try to emulate that, then, move onto to original creations.
dont get down over maps being not up to the standard of developer maps - just keep at it, and only release into public domain when you are happy with your work
most of all - persevere! ( is that spelt right?! )

If you want to make a good first impression of your map, make sure you spell cinema without the 'r' ;)
Maybe the spelling mistake was on purpose?
Damn, i wish i could map like you peeps :(

I'm making an eVil beast of a map called 'The Gauntlet' for TFC.
Player joins, chooses team and spawns in appropriate respawn. The player is offered two routes, the attack wing or defence. In each wing there are 5 corridors, initially all but one corridor is sealed for attack, all are open for defence. Behind each door is a teleporter to a location. Therefore defence can go straight to a location, and once attack have fought to a location, they can unlock their resupply teleporter to go straight in from there next time. Unlocking your door corresponds to locking a door in the enemy base, so they have to fight back to get control of the area.
Attack has one objective. Successfully escort one person through the gauntlet.
The gauntlet is a series of detatched rooms watched over by defence. In each room is a series of nasty traps etc, none of which are truly lethal unless the person inside exposes themselves whilst the traps are armed. The defence wing houses the controls for the traps, and also the switch to open the door to the next stage.
Initially, attack has to insert players into the gauntlet (this takes 3 people minimum, and no enemy intervention is possible here). As soon as the door shuts, the player is on his own. The rest of your force has to engage the enemy defence wing, in order to stop them a/ operating the traps b/ open the door at the end to the next gauntlet stage.
Attack will never meet the enemy attack force, and defence is very sequential and co-operation based. The map is approached from a visual angle, gameplay to be assessed.
Upon completing the gauntlet, the gauntlet will be sterilised and effectively started afresh

Sounds good evil though heavily weighted in defence. Probably not but thats how it sounds

Prolly is slightly, but that just means there will need to be more poeple in attack... or defense will need to be rota based... it will actualyl take some thought.
You will want each gauntlet room defended, in case of a lucky break for the runner.. otherwise you've lost the cap...

lol Darth, just finishing FA map called Nijmegan Bridge which was part of Operation Market Garden. thats what Savin Private Ryan is based on...
Hate to be picky, but you're probably thinking of the 1977 film A Bridge Too Far, set in Holland and based on Operation Market Garden. Saving Private Ryan follows the Normandy beach landings.
I'll get me coat :)

Operation Market Garden - Or 'A Bridge Too Far :)'
Allied forces had German forces on the retreat in the closing years of the war - they decided to seize three bridges in Holland to gain a massive tactical advantage - the operation was name ' Operation Market Garden '
market - the thousands of men to be airdropped
garden - the fields they would land the men in
So, the drop went ahead, and the plan was to have the bridges secure in a matter of days and have reinforcements come through the freshly liberated territory to reinforce the position.
BUT
The drops managed to land right on top of a Panzer division which reconaissance had not picked up on. the other divisions were cut off, and as a result reinforcements did not arrive on schedule.
Thousands of allied soldiers died, and the towm of Arnhem was virtually destroyed by the fighting.
It was a massive catastophe and embarassment for the allied generals, and was made 'famous' in the film
'A Bridge Too Far'
Saving Private Ryan is based on the beach landings in 1944, and specifically I believe Omaha beach where the American forces landed
Hope that clears things up :)

Actually recon had seen the SS panzer div 2 weeks earlier still on the front, but because of losses and fatigue they were pulled back a few days/week before attack.....
The two reasons given for failure was nothing to do with The panzer Div, but the lack of flak suppression and the reassignment of 2nd TAF by fighter command... This was on the orders of Eisenhower, Monty was suppossed to be furious..
Operation Market Garden was still a huge success and the front was forwarded to Nijmegen and reached within 6 miles Arnhem, but they didnt manage to break though... The frontline was then pulled back to the river Waal. This still resulted in most of holland being freed and is said to have shortened the war by at least a year...
They still didnt break out from Nijmegen for about 6 months. Out of the main aims of Market garden 7 out off 9 phases were achieved... Only the huge amount of casualties soured the gains won...
Operation Market-Garden planned by Montgomery
September 17: Paratroopers land: Noord Brabant: 50-mile Corridor north of Eindhoven *Nijmegen area: Grave, Groesbeek* Veluwe: north of Arnhem. Aim of the Operation: capture of river crossings of Maas, Waal, and Rhine, so as to outflank the Siegfried Line, to eliminate V2 launching sites in Holland, and to safeguard the supply of Antwerp. 1250 Carrier planes were deployed together with 254 bombers each towing one or two gliders and protected by some 1000 fighters aircraft.
On Sunday 17, the outskirts of Nijmegen are liberated and from Sionshof serves as an Allied headquarters:
Terminus of the Corridor whence reconnaissance patrols are deployed into occupied Nijmegen, and as communications centre for part of the liberated and occupied territories.
The arrival of the armoured spearhead, the Guards Division, part of Sir Brian Horrock's 30th Corps, is eagerly awaited. Capt. "Harry" A.D. Bestebreurtje, a Dutchman who dropped near Groesbeek, is the Liaison Officer between the Allied Forces and the Dutch Resistance. On his advice, the latter are supplied with arms. They bravely acquit themselves, several being killed in the process.
September 18: Nijmegen head post office captured; Germans cause fires in the city centre.
September 19: Arrival of British Guards; advance into the city of Nijmegen. September 20: American 504th Parachute Infantry cross River Waal in assault boats. Tanks capture Waal Road Bridge.
September 21: Advance towards Arnhem foiled by Germans near Elst; Corridor cut near Veghel.
September 26: After ten days' hard fighting and after crossing the Rhine during the night, the first few Red Devils reach Nijmegen; Arnhem lost.
