SPDIF I think it's called - it's that 2-prong wire that goes from the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM to the sound card.

I've often wondered what it would be like to use it, but up until I upgraded today to a SB Live, I haven't had a sound card that had a slot for it.

So now I have... but I still get bog all out of it. Is anyone using this output?

not all CD-rom drives have a working output :(
You most likely need to open up "play control" (the speaker icon) on the task bar
then go to "options", "properties", "playback" and tick the "CD Digital" box.
Then make sure the CD Digital does not have a tick in it's "mute" box.

The move is now to use the ide interface to read audio cds as files, then process the audio and pass to sound card over PCI.....i have a Sblive, and a DVD rom and CDR, and i think i may just have about 1 analog cable in there if i'm right, i use media players digital player thingy...seems to work fine....no need for any cables, and i know that all the music is digital that way, mind u i guess it uses less proccy power with a cable, and if u have a play button on the drive then to use that u'll need a cable.
