Okay, my voodoo3 2000 pci is showing its age, so is it worth upgrading to a geforce2 mx [new mobo so i can use agp] or would it be better to wait for 10months?!? [when i start my new highly paid job] and get a top of the range one then?
Or, will the voodoo3 still survive for a while yet?
Depends on the spec of your pc.

Athlon tbird 800
abit kt7
128 ram
It certainly is worth it, I went from 20-45 fps on V3000 to 80-99 fps on Geforce 2 MX (on CS that is)
Do it!

i can consistently get around 100-120 fps in q3 on full quality settings with my gef2 (64mb version - although the 32mb version should do the same) - that's off a 1gig processor with 256mb ram

hmm, im also thinking of upgrading to an mx from a voodoo 3 2000 pci. I dont know if its worth it though, will it only improove t+l games? cos there are no decent ones out [that includes q3!]. Its gotto have a big enough improovement to warrent £100 for me.

Put simply, nope not really. The GF2MX is faster than the v3, but not sufficiently faster that you'd want to swap. Get better drivers for the V3, superglue a massive fan to the heatsink and overclock it. The new drivers will help quite a lot. Oh and the radeon SDR is faster than the GF2MX ddr.
But only at 32 bit rendering.

The Geforce 2 MX is a lot faster than the V3 depending on your processor. For Instance I have a K6-2 450 and I had a TNT2 M64 and it sucked in Open GL but Direct 3d was actually surprisingly good, the Geforce 2 MX is only a matter of hundreds of 3d Marks better with the same processor. However its (Geforce 2 MX)Lightning fast in Open GL. I also Upgraded the M64 to a Voodoo 3 2000 PCI and again with a slower processor The Geforce wasb't much faster in 3d mark, but a friend of mine upgraded his K6-III 400 and V3 2000 PCI to a duron 650 and saw 3 times the performance. I would have to say that when the time comes to upgrade your processor you will pay off from the Geforce 2 MX.

well, i think my cpu is fast enough, i got a duron 700mhz, 128MB ram, voodoo3 2000 pci and the rest.
still worth uprgrading to mx?

With a 700-800MHz CPU you're probably fillrate limited because the V3 is reaching its limits. That means you should be able to overclock the V3 and get a fairly good fps increase (nothing amazing mind..). I would suggest you try the Gary Peterson v3.1 overclocker. Most V3's will go up to around 180MHz with no extra cooling, but anything over that you'll probably need an extra fan.
However, if you've got the money don't mess around, go for a GeForce MX - it will be miles faster.

well i ordered an mx anyway cos its only £60, its an elsa.
should come in a couple of days :)
i think that the voodoo 3 was keeping my comp back, especially cos of no agp [its pci card].
btw
go to http://www.gb.buy.com for good prices and £30 off anything over £60 b4 the 31st of jan.
there is an elsa gts 32MB ddr for £145 inc.vat if u use the voucher, which is well cheap. i couldnt afford it though so got mx, im a poor student, lol

Well I was thinking of getting rid of my V3 3000 AGP for a new Elsa Geforce2 MX AGP... is it worth it?
NUTTER12qw12qw

depends what games u play.

yeah thats why i upgraded. HL is a little better [less frame rate drops]. Q3 is amazing because it uses t+l. q3 only used the t+l a little so if future games use t+l better it will rule!
a suppose the cpu matters as well

Erm yeah I got a PIII 550, 128MB. BUT, if I buy the card now and get the £30 discount(which I think I'll be able to) I should be able to buy another 128MB.

For the record, with my V3 I get 41.6 fps on Q3. Thats with all the eye candy on, medium geometric detail, 16 bit colour and medium texture quality @ 1024x768.
I read a review that said the Hercules Prophet II MX only gets 47.6 fps with all the crap on @ 1024x768, albeit at 32 bit colour.
Will it really make all that much difference? Worth £60?

well i have a 700mhz duron [not OCed]. so that my make a diff, cos your cpu is slower.
but, on my comp i got:
on q3 timedemo at 1024 res, 16 bit colour and all details on high i got an average of 75fps
and at 32bit colour i got 61fps average.
thats good results i reckon, i did OC the graphics card though, but the MX's OC soo easily.
