Hi,

Can someone please tell me what happens to your IP with ADSL? In the FAQ on BTO website, it says you are issued IP addresses and cannot have a static IP address. I have some friends who were on the ADSL trial and their IP addresses havent changed since the release of BTO.

Was wondering if the BTO users actually are being issued a dynamic IP address which changes regularly? If it does how long do you get per IP?

Also when the IP address change happens (if at all) what effects would it give? Say if your in the middle of a phat download, and the IP changes will it simply change without having any effect on your current downloads or whatever, or will it be like reconnecting on a modem? Having a small period where you are not connected to the internet?

Thanks in advance.

lo mate.

I too phoned BT and asked if the IPs were dynamic or static and was told they were dynamic. Must say that my IP aint changed since I have been on DSL. As for the other Qs :dead:

In the majority of cases you will stay with the same IP address for the majority of the time. When you login if your old IP address is still avaliable you will be given that, if it had been taken you will get a new one. As the ratio is so small you are most likely to be dealt with the same IP address.

In a modem case there may be 1 IP address to every 3 customers, but with ADSL it won't do. For every 10 customers there are probably 8 IP addresses.

AFAIK the IP address will not change while connected.

Yeah I asked BT about this earlier (while my DSL was down :() The IPs change randomly every so often, they do this to prevent hacking etc and the IP you have will sta the same whil you are online, but may change when you log on again.

In theory i'm trying to get as much a static IP off um as possible :) I'll be using it on a server which wont get rebooted.. so providing it doesn't "go down" I should be ok for a while.

Ta,

HC - get a domain name m8.
I use yi (http://www.yi.org)
That one is updated around 10 mins after I dial up(56k), though there are faster ones availble.
