another problem

Me again

After my last problem - i formatted my hard drive and started from scratch. now i have a new problem. everytime i run half life - and click join game or create game - my screen goes black, but has green lines at the very top of the screen
looks like this

then i have to restart which is annoying. If i run half life in software mode then its ok.

i have tried installing new drivers, reinstalling direct x
i have been told that it could be my monitor refresh rate but i havent tried changing that yet.
Any ideas wot i can do?
I have a Creative Geforce Annihalator 256 pro at the moment
these are first problems i have had with it since i got it 6 months ago.
