Hi all, I'm doing NC computing and going on to HND then prolly a degree. I just wondered at what stage you start learning all these languages. I think in NC you learn TurboPascal which is the basis for visual basic, and HNC/HND you do C and/or C++. but i was wondering when/if you do PHP, ASP, JAVA, javascript and all the other ones with scary names.

Eeeep! ;(

i doubt any course offers tuition in ASP/PHP seeing as its server side and mainly for web use.....
you may be taught Java as your OO language at uni instead of C++.
At stafford they taught us Java in one semester and C in the next...and C++ and Java in 2nd year... tho i left there for queens and we do Java as our main language, not sure we get any C++ "training" here. :(

Until you start a degree your programming language foundation will be based around the less commonly used languages such as Pascal, Cobol etc....

You can pick up PHP quite quickly so I've heard, and you can just get a book or two on it or look up some web tutorials....

In second year HND, or third year Degree u do ya projects on anything u want. So u can learn it like that and get marks for it..
But I just finished first half of 3rd year Comp Science degree and u wont find anyting like asp/php on the sylabus.
But once u looked at C/C++, java, VB, SQL etc. Things like asp/php are a walk in the park.. :)

i go to stafford uni.
the hnd'ers do VB, i dont think they do much else.

i did the same course as the dude who left for queens
learning java c,sql, c++ and there are modules in the final year to do asp and all that stuff.

mind, i am finding c++ a little confusing due to stupid c terminology.
learn c++ from the off, and forget about c
get learn c++ in 21 days, takes longer than 21 days but it helps. although I dont like programming that much. sql wasnt bad, but i prefer tech support and ripping the guts out of pc's anyday
