View Full Version : Fast connection via satellite
Hi all- im just wondering if anyone can tell me if this is worth a try. I know it needs a dish and a £200 card, tenner a month.
Reason id like to try it is, i move accomodation often and hence cant afford to have ASDL/ISDN installed each time i move!
Basically id like to know if
a/is it consistently much faster than 56k- main use=gaming
b/can it have major frequent slow downs from events such as the weather
c/wud it be difficult to set up the dish in correct position
Many thx to anyone who can help!
Once its set up (which probably isnt that hard but i dunno), it is, apparently, subject to weather conditions, but when it is all working fine, you can get HUGE download rates (>100kps i think), but games are no better than on modem, maybe worse, as you cannot send TO the satellite through your dish, so you use a modem to upload stuff, meaning gaming is still slow.
:(

Download speeds are aroung 64K ISDN. There is a serive where you can go above this but paying an a per minute basis. If you que the download you will get about 40KB but it can take hours or days to get on top of the que. As your main use is for games, it is a big no no, your pings will be about 500ms at least. It has to travel thousands of miles to reach the satellite, as well as going through the earths atmosphere.
Weather will affect it slightly, only in bad thunderstormes you may loose all signal.
You will require an Engineer to install it, or you can buy a signal meter, to get it in the right position.
NOT WORTH THE MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!
Um sorry but are you forgetting [punk] who got satellite and pings 50/70 in counterstrike? you cant have all forgot already lol.Look a few pages back and you'll find his posting.
WiiijA
[punk]'s system uses radio waves transmitted/received from a local(ish I spose) station. Satellite's are way different.

The ASTRA satellite uses microwaves and is 22,000 miles from us, Tele2 (what punk uses) uses radiowaves and is on the ground (not in space) at a MAXIMUM of 2 miles away.
at least i'm not paying out of my arse =]
Many thanx all.
If its no good for gaming then its no good full stop!!!!
