View Full Version : some news for ex-C&W customers ... possibly

NTL is toying with an idea that could see Ex-Cable&Wireless (now NTL owned) subscribers skipping the dial-up unmetered access through NTLWorld and moving straight to cable modems:

The telco, which acquired CWC in May last year, has been unable to offer its unmetered ntlworld service to ex-CWC customers because their local networks could not handle the anticipated jump in call traffic.

NTL said upgrading these exchanges is just one of a number of options being considered. It is also considering offering ntlworld via cable modem using either standalone modems or using the modem contained within digital set-top boxes.

An NTL spokesman said the company would announce its decision within a few weeks. "We said last year that we would address the situation by the Spring, and that is still our intention. We are still considering a number of options and customers can expect an announcement in a few weeks or so."

While it's an interesting idea, there are several reasons why it could also end up being a logistical nightmare (maybe that's what they want? More delays anyone?). Most importantly, many of C&W's customers only have a converted BT line and might not be too pleased seeing their gardens ripped up for fibre optics.

It's clear that NTL are going to have to think about this one very carefully and not make any flash judgements. More @ VNUNet.

Fingers crossed eh?

*Cough* I hear BS

NTL are full of talk and ideas which unfortunatly they do not follow thru in the slightest.

NTL currently only care for NTL Customers, ex-C&W customers are second rated and ignored, afterall we are just tag along customers, this is why NTL offer there prime time services too all NTL customers first, and no ex-C&W customers.

Majoirty of Ex-C&W customers will get Cable modems in 2001, but I doubt very much its first half of 2001, most likely late 2001.

Highlander you really are cynical:) The problems/delays to ex CWC customers are all because the ex CWC network is not able to support cm's and NTL world atm. There are a lot of upgrades to the network being done, but it isn't going to happen overnight. And it is costing a fortune. NTL need to cut down on expenditure which is why they are going to make people redundant. Once they trim their outgoings then there WILL be a massive investment to offer both NTL and ex CWC customers parity. Various trials for cm's are about to start in ex CWC areas. You have to look at the broader picture. Upgrade network now and go bust or wait a few months improve revenue then improve network and not go bust.

More *coughs* over here:)

Its clear too me that NTL have too offer its prime services too its NTL customers first and ex-C&W customers are simply told "soon".

After all the rumours/talks/reports from last year none of them even became true in the slightest.

I doubt Ex-C&W customers will see Cable modems not for another 3-4 months.

And we are just tag along customers:)

NTL arent selfish, its just they have too sort out there own customers first, before moving over too ex-c&w customers, it doesnt take Joe bloggs too see that after all we are still labeled as "Ex C&W" customers, lets hope after the exchanges are upgraded we can all be NTL customers.

Personally i would rather have a reliable service that i pay for than a ****ty one that would be as frustrating as hell.

But then i have cm and am very happy with it, when i have had problems it takes a while but once you get thru the monkeys to the techies, they are generally helpful

If you consider how many of the free dial up services that have tried huge roll outs only to fold cos they can handle the load. It would seem that ntl are taking the cautious route and only rolling out as and when then can. If you try a project slowly in a small area, you are more likely to be able to anticipate solve problems b4 they arise, rather than jump off a cliff and find you forgot yer parachute

My 2 cents
