Make sure your NIC is set to half duplex and not full, and if its on auto sens duplex put it too half because some cards autosens wrong :)
And you should be getting 70-80k downloads on average, with large bursts if its all running right.

is that from all sites, or just one in particular?

Mines set to full duplex so that advice is wrong for a start...

Well, the cable support told me half duplex as well, why are you assuming you're right just because yours is set differently?

I had a similar prob with d/l speeds and it was down to my old network card, put a newer one in and it was sorted.

I can assure you I'm correct, you really should have it set to half duplex.most peoples poor downloads have been caused by incorrect duplex setting just check the cable.support newsgroup :)

So I was right....for a start :P

Fixed the problem, a few setttings such as MaxMTU and RWIN were way off for cable as been on 56k.

I wasn't saying anyone was right or wrong just the information provided was misleading. Like I say mines set to full duplex with regular pings of 20+ and downloads anywhere from 5k to 80k/sec so it was wrong and had nothing to do with it or maybe its that the NTL CM's don't like being on full duplex and have to run at half :)

and Damnations Fury why are you using USB if you have a cable modem???

I am using USB because i had to order the modem and they asked if I had Windows 98 second edition or windows ME, which i do, so they sent me the usb variant of the sb4100 (which just had only the usb connection and not the ethernet card connection).

Half duplex or full duplex?Hmmmm.... The system is design to run cm's using half duplex. Not saying it won't work but ideally should be half.

The NIC's on my home network are to full duplex for the local network and the cable NIC is set to half.
System works fine, CM's only transmit and recieve at half anyway so being set to full will have no positive effect.

Doesn't seem to have any negative effect either :E
