ntl cable download speeds

can some one help me?i am waiting to have my cable installed
and as you can guess this is all new to me.....
Having read some of your problems,i`m now scared stiff at what i have to do to set it all up?
but my main query is from what i read from ntl,you get download speads of up to 512kbs,but every one i`ve read about gets between 50-80 kbs.......am i missing something?
i was expecting a bit more than that,or have i missed something?

One more thing...most of the problems posted are things i have never herd of before.....allright i know i`m not the brightest spark....is there any sites etc where i can find out more info?

Im gonna get cable soon as well and as far as i understand u get 512k bits but dl at 70K bytes its a question of bits and bytes. There are 8 bits to a byte. The 512 is in bits and the dl speed people are talking about is in Bytes.

So if any of you that have allready got cable could tell me,
what sort of download speads you are getting?....and is it realy that much quicker than downloading on my standard 56k
set up?

It depends on wot site and where u r but u should get 60 - 70. Where u will get 5 on ur 56k.

Me waits excited 4 me cable install all then mp3s 2 dl in secs.

Its not only hugely better than 56k but greatly better than isdn also.you wont regret it believe me(apart from when theres network problems:)),you should download at 70-80k on average with larger bursts,just abit better than 3-4 on 56k and 7-8 on isdn :E

Faster downloads are a big bonus, but what i really like is the always on part of it, you can have radio via the web, get news headlines and play online quake, for a fixed rate.
The active desktop and channels come into the own when the connection is always there.

Downloads approx 70 - 90kbytes per second (although 512 / 8 = 64 kbytes so whoopee free band width :))

Good luck with install, it is dead easy, just make sure your mac address is registered with ntl and you should find it a breeze
