View Full Version : More NTL cable help please
Ok folk's sorry to bother u again but after I put up my earlier post i decided to take the plunge and get the cable modem, I'm still waiting for a date for them to put it in but that won't be to long anyway i have some more newbie questions.
1.I need to purchase an ten base t ethernet card and was wondering where I could get one from and how much are they?
2.I would also like to know where the ethernet card plugs in?(i haven't yet been inside the tower)so i'm not sure if i have space for one i just assumed i had, in the excitement.
3.And would I have to unistall my 56k modem and drivers? or could I leave these in place as back up?
Any help would be appreciated:)
1. Go to your local friendly computer stockist and you can pick one up for betweeen 10-20 quid (or if it's PC World 20-40 quid;)) Or try your local computer fair if you have one.
2. You'll need a spare PCI socket, time to undo the case and go exploring. Switch the computer off first though;)
3. No, you should be able to have both installed, I did.
Thanx a lot m8, you've put my mind at rest I was reading an old review of the computer I own and it say's I have 2 spare PCI slots so I can relax now:)
Unfortunatley I have no local stockist near me except dixons which i doubt sells these cards but i'll try,if noti'll have to order it from somewhere:)
One day I won't be a newbie:afro:
P-Brain...just pay the extra 25 quid and have the engineer (ahem) ome out and fit it for you...gives you some one to blame then when it all goes wrong
Actually m8 I asked them how much it would be for them to install it in my comp, and they said it'd be £120:(
which is way to much i'd rather fit it myself.
I've got a DLink DFE530-TX Ethernet card from http://www.dabs.co.uk it was £20. Dont pay £120 for it to be fitted it is piss easy to do. The £25 is the install fee for the cable to your cable modem not the CM to your PC.
To fit the 10baset card is easy. First unplug your PC from the mains (important). Remove the cover from the tower and slide it off. Inside the PC at the back are the PCI slots they are covered from the outside world by little blanking panels, you will have to remove one by the PCI slot you wish to use, you will need a screwdriver. Take the 10 baset card and put it into the PCI slot. They are a tight fit and will need a little rocking to get it in, dont push too hard though. The card, once seated properly will line up with the screw hole on the PC case. Screw it in. Put the cover back on your PC and turn it on. When it boots up PC will say it has discovered new hardware and something about new drivers. Put the driver disk in a/ (supplied with 10base t card) and select a:/ or have disk option, cant rember. Thats it. You might have to restart again. Take out the floppy b4 you do. Then plug in cat 5 cable to Ethernet card (you will need Cat5 RJ45 cable if you dont have any)and in to back of modem and off you go, easy. NOT worth £120.
Thanx for the advice m8, I was a bit concerned about installing it myself:) though the part about needing cable has got me a bit worried will I not get that with the card or the modem?
I didn't get any but some peeps did, if there's none in the box that the CM came in the no, you wont get any with the ethernet card. You can get RJ45 CAT5 cable at Dixons, PC world etc. Its about £8 for 5 metres.
Ok thanx again m8, theirs just one final thing i'd like to know:) what port or whatever does the modem plug into?
Its a RJ45 connector. Theres one one the ethernet card and one on the CM, the cat 5 cable has RJ45 connectors on both ends and joins the pc and cm together.
Ok but If the card's in the tower, how does the modem plug into it?
This'll be my final question (well at least until i get the actual cable). I'm sure i'm worrying too much, but i always do.
When you put the card in it sits up against the back of the tower, there are holes in the back of the tower covered by removable blanking things. You unscrew these blanking things and put the card in the PCI slot up against the hole in the back of the PC into the outside world. If i was you i would have a look around the inside of your PC before you install the card so you can see what is going on.
OK I've got that m8, i'll be more confident when I come to do it, though they still have'nt given me an installation date I've already ordered it just waiting to hear from them and I'm going to order the same ethernet card as you, it seems pretty good for the money.
So for (hopefully) the final time  Thanx a lot
