Lo all.
Ok, I have an ADSL connection, via a 3com router, connected via 10Mb Cat5 to a 10Mb hub, connected onto 2 pc's..
now then, every so often it drops, I think its a problem at the central, but thats another story..
However, is there any system settings in windows registry that will increase the through put, reduce ping time, whatever it is I need to know about to speed upo downloads and reduce ping.
Remember I am connected to the ADSL via a hub and a router, it isnt an internal card, and i have no modems connected.
The system i have is Win 98 ME, 850 ath running at over 1ghz..
The network cards are 3com 3c905, and I remember reading somewhere about editing registry setting for larger or smaller block sizes and increasing throughput, but i cant remember where, or even if it applies here...
thanks all..
hi Babylon 5 fan
;)
where are you located [imprecisely speaking]
try a tracert to whatever location you are contacting where you are getting this problem - if you see hopped servers reporting back at 400-800ms - this is highly likely the cause - not any facilitation you haven't made on your system - I'd leave that alone at this point in time
What you will find however, that the problem of esculating bandwidth problems and internet activity across the www is getting alot worse - how this will change I don't know, as the adsl/cm issue increases, so will the bandwidth problem across the globe
just so you don't need to know
:D
Do you Mean TTL and MTU setting etc. ?
Erm
MyComputer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\C lass\Net\0000
I know this is where MTU settings go but i dont know the values for DSL.
Bah bollox I dont even know if this is what you mean.
have these two PCs been configured previously with other modem technology?
have they both gone through new installations shortly before ADSL was installed?
if ADSL has been installed for the first time, no modem analogue before it, then you don't need to change anything
the drop line could mean a number of things - did the BT Engineer report any statistics on the connection such as:
a) db response on the line [if it was over 30, that could be the problem - if it were of 40, it's DEFINITELY the problem [mine is 11 which is near perfect line conditions]
b) are both AMD CPU's overclocked? set the AMD to the normal setting on the PC connected to the router and the line
c) tracert figures need to be tested here to various know locations where this problem occurs - ordinarily, I haven't experienced a drop line even at 1200ms, even from uunet.co.uk, so this is subjective at best
d) get hold of DrTCP0.19 - if it's Business 500 the RcvWindow [RWIN] should be 65536 and the MTU 1500 - apart from the MTU, the RWIN is the only thing that needs changing [goto http://www.dslreports.com-tweaks and test it]. Set MTU Auto Discovery "ON"
e) you're probably using 3com 3c905"b" - set them manually to half-duplex/10Mbits (the driver version should be 4.x)
f) I've mentioned this before, but in a USB sense. But I recommend it anyway - get hold of a "SurgeMaster II" socket array to guard against spiking electrical conditions - if you have more than 1 PC using a variety of electrical systems, it's a worthy investment
g) goto the PUB and enjoy yourself [bit chilly tho]
i think you'll find he didnt have BT engineers in Ibiza.....if he's still there.
