i can't connect to the servers. when i double click the icon it just keeps telling me "could not connect to wireplay" either that or it gives me the dial up connection screen BUT I'M ALREADY CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET!!!!!!!!

Untill microsoft decide to get back online theres nothing
we can do for the moment.

The wireplay browser checks to see if its online by looking at the microsoft website, usually the more reliable
of sites but since its down the wireplay browser thinks it has no connection.

I think it's fair to say not many people would look at the main GP/WP pages to find out (and where exactly an announcement like that would go I don't know). I think with people checking the forums and quizzing GP staff on IRC it's enough...
