Best advice I can give is:
Dont be afraid to ring up uni's and colleges, speak to them about the qualifications/paths they would recommend to enhance your development as a 3d artist. Likely, sculpture will feature heavily.
What education level are you at?
Seeing as you said subject's' I would guess either A-level or GCSE...

I'm also thinking of becoming a 3D graphic designer, or some other area of graphic design...
Hoping to get Art GCSE and A Level and then go on the university and continue with it further...
you can get there in lots of ways.
I did GCSE art, design Alevel (like wood, plastic, etc), went to university and did product design, picked up 3ds to show animations to add more to my marker-pen renderings...got a job doing boat design on the strength of my 3DS pics...then left there and went freelance 3D...and here i am. curious route.

it doesn't sooth the pain, oh! the pain!
hm best advice i can give is start doing 3d. if you want a head start then just start doing it now. there are loads of tutorials out there if you can find them.
get some software (can be anything...make something in Milkshape 3D for halflife...anything), and go from there. you don't have to go and warez up a copy of 3DS. I never had any proper training in what I do. "sit there and play with it" has been my approach to, er, heheh, many things in life. ahem. no. you know what I mean.

sod it, been promising myself i'd learn some web-design etc.
/me pops off to buy a copy of Flash
/me comes back
HOW MUCH?!
:E
do art and graphic design for a-level computing if they do it in your area too.
then go do a foundation, the uni's love it
then look in the ucas art book, there are courses in there for 3d design, and also play around like the other bloke/gal said

now 3d apps ahhhh
the good ol choice day eh :)
if ya can m8 get a copy of cgi or 3d world from ure local newsagent because they usually have the low end 3d apps on there for free and fully workin so thats some were to get started m8 :)
my other advice is to get used to as many proccys as u can :) sounds daft but when u know how to do 1 task 10 diff ways in 10 apps :) it kinda helps havin dat knowledge it saves time trust me!!!!
well i use truescape 3 se (free but severly crippled :( )
its a good modellar but i also have many other apps that some times cover the same area just for the sake of it :)
well am about to go to college soon (cheers) so am basically gettin me stuff 2gether b4 the end of this month cos thats when me bloody interview is
at the mo i aint done many good graphics but i have done some visit me webby to see:)

Hmm how come i never noticed the graphics & art forum before....(coz u never looked stupid).
Question: What is the current range of pay for good modelers/ graphic designers?
I'm am for my sins a mechanical engineer and am desperatly trying to get into a different field. Unfortunatly all my 3d skills are totally oriented towards acad, you know textures are for wooses and detail is in the polygons etc. Id like to learn more about max, but I find it hard to get my head around the differences in modeling. Are there any particular books that the experienced would recomend for conversion training :)
m8 thats why i said he SHOULD learn a few proccys to get to know what its like. Like many said 2 me there is no 1 specific route bout doin 3d etc its just bein there at the right time i geuss :(
right okay max is okay (really!) but its a v complex modellin system to build structures etc wont take u long but t know it inside out takes years of dedication and reading (have to do some of it :) )
unfortunately there are so many different aspects of 3d that 1 specific route may not get u to were u want to go i believe this is were ure stuck m8 but thankfully i guess if u have the skillz in acad then it wont be 2 hard how to learn the extra bits u need to know in 3d apps etc.
books are a good thing but be prepared to get lots of reading in b4 u even touch max ( dont get warez plz) if u just type in 3d max in amazin then ull get loads of books video tutorials etc in there but be prepared cos they cost a bucket but they are worth it mind because there written by the best in the industry and these are the books u should look for.
well must dash think i done enuff writin for a month so ill leave u to gleam over my animations :)
