A lot of confusion is happening in this subject, i always thought it was something that was dangerous but im not exactly sure. (i had a convo with some dude on the net yesterday that said he did extreme sports, "which" i asked "clay pigeon shooting"...hmmm)
In my opinion its things like skateboarding, blading, bmxing, snowboarding and "mild" extreme sports are things like skiing, paragliding, things like that.

What Mebe said in hte rock climbing post was very true, I think. Sure, skateboarding, bmxing, snowboarding etc can be called 'extreme sports' but that doesn't make them more dangerous, exciting or better than other sports. In fact, in my opinion skateboarding and blading are two fairly safe sports: you don't get many worse injuries than some scratches or a broken wrist. Then again, rugby, not usually called an 'extreme' sport, has many broken necks involved.

Maybe extreme sports should be renamed cool sports, as they do make you look a lot cooler than other sports, and generally you end up at the end clean and not too out of breath. That's why they attract so many posers than other sports.

I'll stop babbling now.

nah mate, you made some good points there. All extreme sports have thier posers and followers.
Just the other day i read in the paper, a 7 year old kid was trying to ollie a 15 set, and when a skater to ask him what he was doing he said he was trying to "jump" them becuase he saw Chad muska do it on tony hawks 2. The boy couldnt actually ollie. see?

most extreme sports are also things you do alone, not in a team. For fun (supposedly)

I'd be happy with cool <> extreme.

Danger doesnt seem to enter into it. Quite a few years back cave diving (exploring flooded caves using scuba gear) was statistically the most dangerous sport when measured by deaths per number of people doing it. I doubt this wet muddy and uncomfortable activity would be classed as 'extreme' even though it is pretty dangerous.

OTOH Tennis apparently has the highest overall injury rate of any sport, extreme tennis anyone?

Extreme seems to be a word used to signify sports activities which are:
- Trendy
- Have a sub-culture (music, language, clothes etc)
- Look good on TV
- Can be done competitvely

Most skate pros (people that do skateboariding) dont do it for money (well, money of course, but thats not all...) they do it for fun.

So, is an extreme sport something that is only done for fun? (not for like competitions...)

I'm hard pushed to even call skateboarding a 'sport' never mind 'extreme'.Unless you're talking downhill/slalom (a real sport)where you have the thrill of the competition, where you have the fear of coming off and damaging more than your ego, where you have the adrenalin rush and also the added kudos of being a downhill skateboarder(if that's what you need) not just some ponce who does a few tricks to impress.

I reckon though,we shouldn't try to define any sport as being extreme.
I think it's the sportsman/woman who participate in any sport to an 'extreme' level of dedication, mental and physical ability who would be more worthy of the title 'extreme' than would otherwise be inferred on their sport.
Surely a sport is only as extreme as its participants.

I do think skateboarding is as much as a sport as say something like football.
Why you ask?
A sport is something you do for:

-exercise
-fun

In my opinion that is the definition of 'sport' and i think most people will agree.
Which one of those doesnt skatboarding have? And to make it an "extreme" sport it is named that becuase of the adreniline you reach while partaking in the activity.

Say in football, you dont feel the rush of "if i dont make this ledge, dammit i'm screwed" you know what is going to happen any way.

Those are my thoughts and if anyone has anytrhing to comment on them, please do.

According to the dictionary...

Sport: Amusement, diversion, fun

and

Sport: Pastime, Game; outdoor pastime, e.g. hunting, fishing, racing, cricket, football

I guess that allows just about anything to be a sport.

As said up there ^^^ its not the sport that is extreme... skateboarding, climbing etc aren't extreme unless *you* perform them at an 'extreme' level (which I doubt any of us really do). Being able to do a bit of climbing or a few tricks on a skateboard/blade/bmx doesnt make for 'extreme'.

I dunno, I know me and lucas are good on the old stick, izzie climbs a bit and so forth.

Extreme doesnt mean like jumping of 12 story buildings, just like doning stuff thats reasonalby dangerous.

I don't know about you, but I can get a fair rush when playing football, of the type 'I've just gone past four defenders on my own, and if I slot it in the corner I'll be the hero forever!'.

Anyway, in the defintion above : ' it depends how much you put in', it means any sport can be an extreme sport. Extreme sychronised swimming, anyone? Extreme archery?

A point and issue i would like to raise. As said before about posers or poseurs id like to add comments.
Kids like 8/9 play games like THPS2 and think that it is not hard to do kickflip onto rail grind.
Without learning they think they will manage it.
I blame the game for this corupt image and when people break arms and stuff i think there parents think skateboarding is a rubbish and idiots sport.
Than they give the impression and feeling that your'e not welcome in there community.
About 2 months ago i went to visit my bro in london and he had took us to the skate shop in marble arch The Blue room. Inside i saw a kid about 9 yrs old who had broken his arm and i sort of eavesdropped into there conversation and his mother was talking about some incident with a skateboard.
It's people like that who play THPS 2 and thinks doing an ollie onto a rail is easy and than they go round with m8s and than break there arms.
Its like a cycle.

Sorry for my points of view Wetwilly but i had to explain this because i have tried to define what THPS 2 partly does(not always)or games in the region of Xtremesports.
Im sure there must have been BMXing, Snowboarding incidents across the same matters.

Also ill stop now and i will give my definition of Xtreme Sports.

"An extreme sport is one which pushes a limit where a more realistic chance of getting hurt and an adrenaline rush for doing tricks."

Anyway im off to do some stuff and maybe later skate so ill check forums later.

Cya all

God i beggin to hate dat bloody game! (THPS2)
even tho its great it p1sses me off when some kid calls you sh1t coz ur havin trouble ollie a 5 foot gap!

I find the best way of xplain to them is too put em on your board and tell them to get into the air like a jump.

They usually seem totally amazed that its not stickin to their little reebok classics!

Sorry for strayin from topic but i was bored and in a moaniy mood!

It's in at the udnerground marble arch stop. Big shop but filled with annoying weirdos. My brother asked for discount on buying some wheels or bearings and the guy jsut said "no".:)

Izzeh
01-02-2001, 23:09
What are they meant to say??
I could understand wanting a discount when buying most of a board but if your just buying some wheels then why would they give you a discount if they don't even know you?

The staff at blue room seem ok :)

I do think that the blue room can be a bit overpriced on blades and pads though ;(
