I am about to upgrade my motherboard, processor, hard disk, memory, and graphics card. What is the correct sequence and procedure to carry out the following tasks. I know some are obvious.

Boot up for the first time, and what disk do I use? (no floppy with mobo and very little instruction)
Install motherboard drivers that come on motherbard CD.
Update motherboard bios.
Format new hard drive.
Partition new hard drive.
Install Win98SE.
Update other hardware drivers.

to be safe create yourself a boot floppy using a working PC i.e. format a:/s
add the fdisk and format commands to this floppy.

boot the new machine using this floppy.

run fdisk to partition the drive. (doesn't work if the new drive is over 64Gb)

format the C: drive
install windows
add motherboard drivers/hardware drivers
update bios
format other partitions

If the motherboard allows boot from CD then you won't need the boot floppy. Older CD drives may need drivers.

The CD that comes with the motherboard probably has slightly out-of-date drivers. If you have a working machine you should hunt out the latest ones to save yourself having to update them later.

1. Make sure the PC works and boots on and all cards, wires, cables etc are in place and check jumpers/bios setting for the correct speed of the Processor.
2. Fdisk and Format the hard drive.
3. Install Windows.
4. Once windows is installed, install your motherboard driver (if any came with the motherboard).
5. Install drivers for Graphics, sound, modem cards etc.
6. Test your system and test differant setting etc to see if everythings all right and what setting are best for your computer, (BUT) make sure the system isn't overheating and that all fans are connected and working (it has happen)

PS. Is there a need to update your bios? if you don't know what you are doing, you may mess things up which means a new motherboard.

put a floppy disk in a working PC go into DOS.

Run this command Format a: /s the '/s' switch creates a system disk and the disk is now bootable.
Copy the following files from your C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND folder FORMAT.COM FDISK.EXE SYS.COM that's all you need

So how do you then install Win98SE from a CD when there are no CD drivers installed and your computer cannot find the drive? We are referring to a clean install on a new hard drive.

Make a Win98 bootdisk from >control panel >add/remove >windows setup this has all the cd rom drivers on it already.

Calzor Suzay,

Many thanks again. It's only easy when you know the answer!

Thank goodness we have a guardian angel.

Incidentally I have ordered the IBM 30Gb Deskstar from Dabs.

Maxim UK & Ganger,

You both suggest installing Win98 before the motherboard drivers.

Should the motherboard drivers not be installed before win98? I think they install from DOS anyway and I am concerned that Win98 will not install properly if the Win98 drivers are not installed?

Do they install to the motherboard or the hard disk?

Sorry for being picky but I am a novice at this.
