I'm currently looking into raising awareness of gameplay.com and wireplay amongst students. I am interested in how many of you play via university systems or Janet, how many of you have pc's in your student digs, if any of your uni's have online gaming organisations and any good ideas in general.

Send ideas to james.kaye@gameplay.com -cheers

Uprising I work for a company that produces University and Course guides for schools/colleges and universities. We sell adverting space then give the products out for free to careers libraries. We are the biggest in its class, have the largest database of students in the country and ... I work here. http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Give one of the salesscum, sorry people a call on 0171 3366633. Im sure they can give a much better salespitch than an IT bloke like me.

Errr, i hope this is not off-topic, but could'nt you also get into the larger chains of cybercafes as well (you know the one run by that Greek bloke in london...whatever it's called). You might have to supply them some of the more popular games, but people might like to have the chance to play via their nice big fat (data that is) pipes at a relatively cheap cost.

Just an idea (which you've probably thought of already).

Oh Springboard may be a good place to start because thats aimed at 15-18 year old school students. IT Casebooks too, but to be honest I dont really know much about what this company does. I just fix stuff when its broke.

<university systems or Janet

For a start lol if Liverpool uni had a computer not out of date by ten years running a bizzare version of unix we might have stood a chance of getting a game going.

But then again last time we tried to play X-bomber man for a laff we had our computer privilages removed for 2 weeks and couldn't do our coursework. Not that we were going to do it anyway http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Next time we remembered that every one in 8 computers has a sound card hidden in it http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/teeth.gif

They are all so security concious round ere dunno bout other uni's but ours is a bleeding mare. You can't even fart without them knowing.

So most students I know game from home or their flats.

IM IN UNI AT CARDIFF and game from home.
We have tried to put hl and other games on the collective hd and play on a lAN but they tend to get nuked quite quickly. Also we cant use wp because of the dedicated dial up.So until we get unlimited hd space for games <we get about 15 megs so what can u do with that?> and wp goes to an open system we r giong to have to use our own pc's at home

I know Razz at uni up in Scotland does a computer gaming technology course.

other than that my experiences with uni computers is that they are usually out of date by a year or two and they abhore gaming on their systems. I know on our set up they wouldnt let it as it would disrupt theothers working. Im sure for the majority of unis the same will apply, other than out of hours clubs. But again doubtful as most unis are tight bast and would hate having to buy new hardware for the comps such as 3d cards as well as the possibility of someone mucking it up.

Prodigy, your school sucks ass.
I left school at the end of 5th year last year and the only thing that even got me there in the first place was the fact that the school library had 8 p2's all linked up via a lan and the librarian had installed them all with doom and quake, in our free periods all us 5th years would head down there and frag each other like hell for 40mins till the period was up AND IT ROCKED,even some of the teachers and the librarian would get in on the fun, but mind you the school i was at was only 10 yrs old and the rector was always going on about how we had up-to-date computers and was always getting the latest brought in every couple of years.

I'm at the Uni of Dundee, they tend to be pretty strictabout how people use the IT services, games are strictly forbidden, even games like solitare and mindswepper have been removed. Also student disk space is limited to 10 MB so this means that Dundee students have to game at home.

Mathski

10Mb thats Luxury at Sunny Salford we get 7Mb and then ahve to have a network version of Win 3.1 installed which brings it down to about 5Mb, allthough in the Physics departmaent we've now got hard drives installed and Win NT4 but even after deleting the old Win 3.1 (which needs re-installing if we use the Libary comps) we still have 7Mb and then we have to save all out work their like pascal programs and Scientific Workplace files including the graphics to our server space leaving about 4Mb hmm maybe enough for Doom, but even with Internet Download speeds as high as 150k per second 8:30 in the morning with no one else in the room, actual games fare worse I tried bringing in Doom and put in on mine and a mates space and the performance was poo worse than my 56k connection here at home.

Just to make you all jealous http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/smile.gif

Games students get 200mb, normal ones get 20mb, we have NT or Win95 on all computers. Some kick ass comps in the games lab.
Loads more and it's really kewl! You are encouraged to play games at uni!!!! http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/teeth.gif

Razz m8 - I'm icqing about the course you're taking, make sure you check your messages.

But in the meanwhile I'm moan heavily about our crappy school.
i'm not joking btw when I say that we AREN'T allowed ANY diskspace - we have to have disks or we can't save! I told em to stuff that and made my own hidden directory http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/tongue.gif
They have tonnes of security settings etc. but I've managed to get through them. Local computer "hacking" is a piece of ****. Remote hacking is what I can't do (and don't intend to http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/teeth.gif)
But now they have something called WinDoctor or something that COMPLETELY locks almost eveything out. Dos prompt, explorer, my computer etc. maximum security.
i can't get get past it http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/frown.gif
And all I wanted to do was change the 640x480 resolution (shudder)
Our school sux. I know more about computers than the 2 computer teachers.

And pot noodle - wouldn't touch it with a bargeopole m8. You wouldn't if you knew what went in!!! http://www.wireplay.co.uk/ubb/biggrin.gif

well up here in StrathCylde uni, me and my m8's asked the sys admin if we could bring in our own base units and use there monitors and 10Mbps network, and to put it politly, they told us to **** off.
Not lol.

Anyway, hope to see u all playin' duke, so i can destroy u all!

Appartly the cal labs at strathcylde are not too strict about ceratin "programs" although the administraters do try to crack down on games alot any way most of my experience is with the lab in the phys/pharm biulding where comps are always busy. also some off these comps had icq but this must have been for the malisians who spend all their time in that biulding anyway 1+ for the phys/pharm comps they all have win 95 rather than the crap win3.1 or NT you get everywhere else

MWUAHAHAHAAAAA, my high school was great... we got in early every morning so since the IT rooms son went to the school a Quake2 LAN was soon set up and we had nice games of Q2 every morning, and the swine 6th formers played during lunch time, but kicked us pauper 5th formers out :(

However, the current crap college NT network is suhgiatre [read every other letter and make your word choice ;}]... can't even get Java MUD2 working, it's quite quite dire. Roll on next September and a hopeful Uni network connection from my room... :: dreamy sigh ::

I'm at Birmingham Uni doing Biochemistry
Here we have pretty fantastic internet access, I access it at home, but the computing clusters let you access pretty much anything, even porn, but if the net adminisrtaors trace you you get in poo.

To access the internet I just use my comp in halls, we all have a phone line at rates comparable to BT at evening at weekend. I'm pretty much sorted.

Oh. And in ouurflat we have a four computer LAN set up (with a 600mhz athlon running as the master server!!!!!!!!!)

Just thought i'd make a lil post and tell you about my lovely computer setup here at Scarborough uni...well, the majority of the computers here are only p2-266's with 64 meg, but they do their job, I have no limit on disk space at all, I currently have 300 megs worth of stuff on this network... :D but the best thing about this place is the connection, running at an average of about 30k/sec when the IT department is full, and later on at night, running up to about 200+k/sec, hehe, and the best news is, after christmas, I get my computer hooked up to the network from my room, with the same kind of access speeds, YaY...all night AHL sessions for me I think...w00t.

I can tell you the whole setup of Nottingham University Student network if you want. I won't post it here yet, just in case any admins etc are reading it. Suffice it say firewalls are crap unless you set them up right. If anyones interested icq or email me. Some fool on the network got busted big time for distribution of new Star Wars film.

Ok - I'll dish some dirt.

General user areas

Mostly Viglen P2-266s some new P3's, 128mb. 17" monitors, some with zip drives, etc. Sound available if you supply headphones. Some 100mbs connections but still quite a lot 10mbs due to infrastucture. Win98 image download from network. However, new image only downloaded if current is curupt or you feel like a fresh version. A few bits and bobs disabled. Novel netware 4 front end with access to loads of progs. Can install games if you feel like it but ain't worth it, need to get 3d graphics card drivers. All pcs forced to use web cache etc.

Student Network

All rooms in hall have a connection point for data and voice. NTL own the socket, you pay them a fee. You also need to buy a standard realtek ne2000 card to be usedfrom uni student computing bit . They will only allow connection for certain mac numbers. Can use a mac id reprogrammer. Claim you have to buy it for compatability reasons. Firewall set up for this network. Can surf etc. Can play on internet servers but need to fiddle around. You could dial direct with phone socket but they charge 8p a min minimum, so is far too expensive. I could go on......

Playing games is literally impossible at salford Uni. There's never enough memory to play them, but I know that someone installed a game on to one of the computers desktop and then took up the entire Network server whilst they had a 3hr session of quake2
